some early 97s had the 95/96 front end, they are typically the ones that say "TOYOTA" on the back in the big decals if i recall correctly. Hard to find the early 97s are....

This information is wrong. 95.5-96 trucks have the same front end. The 97 had a different grill and headlights, although it kept the same bumper.
you're half right. only the 2wd changed, the 4wd kept the same front end.

only 97's with the older front end were 4wd. there were no 2wd 97's with the old front end.

nah but fo real, :waytogo: i always wondered why they were that rare :selfbonk:

Sorry to revive this thing from the dead but I had a quick question for everyone who has done the 01-04 conversion. If you decided to use the 01-04 core support, which brackets did you use for the ac condenser? I need a new condenser and I'm wondering if I can just buy a condenser from the 01-04 bodystyle.

Thanks everyone,

One more for bringing this back from the dead. I have a 2000 2wd that I'd like to convert to the 1996-1998 front bumper - (the one where the chrome extends all the way back to the wheel opening.) I have the actual chrome bumper piece itself, but nothing else. Does anyone have a parts list (or better yet) the parts that I would need to do this? I'm going for an old school custom kind of look and want to get rid of the newer style front bumper cover.

Thanks in Advance!

should be the same instructions if you have the 2wd bumper. so you mainly need the bumper, lower valence, frame brackets, and valence brackets.

Thanks for the link. I had done a search , but I definitely missed it. Does anyone happen to have an exploded diagram or a parts number list for the brackets needed to do the 2WD conversion - or are they the same?

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/95-2000_parts_list.pdf

the first page of the PDF has the exploded diagram and part numbers for the 95-97 front bumper.

2WD blk/chr bumper - part no. 52101-04050/52101-04060
2WD blk valence - part no. 53911-04041
R/L outer bracket - part no. 52145-35020/52146-35020
R/L mounting bracket - part no. 52011-AD010/52012-AD010

The bracket part numbers are the same. Just depends on what bumper you wanna install.

i have an 01 bumper, 97 4wd fenders, and no grill on my 96 2wd right now.

i was thinking about doing the full 01 swap, but the more i look at the 98 2wd, the more im leaning toward that.

so, my question.. am i gonna have an issue doing a swap to the 98 wd grille/headlights/etc with the 01 bumper?

You will have to open the headlight holes to accommodate for the larger 98-00 headlights and there will be a small gap between the bumper and grill when looking straight down from the top.

yeah... I knew about the headlights,i just wanted to make sure the bumper wasnt going to give me any problems. so from the front/sides it should look fine right?

I know the 4runner conversion was talked about slightly. The generation was 96-02 and there were some changes with the introduction of the "fat lip" bumper in 99, and the different grille and hood scoop for the 01-02, but were there other differences in the limited package to the SR5 other than the fender trim? Could I mix and match between the different years and have everything essentially fit? Or would I have to stick with the 01-02 since the bumper is already on my truck?

visually, besides the bumper and signal, the only difference is the headlights. earlier models used a "halogen" type headlight, where as the the newer ones used a "crystal" clear headlight. IIRC, corner lamps are the same, as are the rest of the front parts.

Since this is for "dummies", anyone have a cost breakdown of the conversion they performed? I'm having a hard time hunting between all the different sites and indentifying the parts actually needed. For example Rockauto shows several different types of brackets for the 01 bumper, not sure which ones would be actually needed for fitting my 99 and where the "fabrication" process starts. There's also "headlight assemblies" listed as a part on some part sites, not sure if these are worth the purchase or not(or if they even come with headlights). Just want to see what the project came out to costing for you folks, might save me some return shipping fees on unneccessary parts, or an unmountable bumper / headlight until the right part is found. If you did the 98-00 to 01, part #'s would be awesome too! :headbang:

I can't help with an '01, but I just did a '95-'97 front bumper and valance on a '00 2WD.

I used a '95 -' 97 2wd chrome bumper and a '95 - '97 2WD valance, and '95 - '97 brackets. All of these parts were cheaper quality after market and did not fit too well. The bumper brackets were too short, so I had to use a hole saw to enlarge the bolt holes so they would slide forward. I then used big washers to clamp them down to the frame. The bumper itself had to be shimmed outward from the brackets in order for the lower valance to clear the frame ends - which are tight against the back of the valance. The valance itself had the tabs and holes in slightly the wrong places, so I had to leave some of the bolts out so it wouldn't bend and buckle in the corners. I used 1/4 bolts and nylon insert lock nuts along with washers instead of the factory bolts and clamp style speed nuts to secure it to the bottom of the bumper. The driver's side valance tab is secured to a bracket that extends down from the fender with zip ties. Not my first choice, but the factory L brackets and rubber mounts would not fit back in place. On the passenger's side, I had to make a stiff wire hanger to pull the bumper up to the fender bracket so it would sit level. Fortunately, all of this is hidden by the inner fender covers. You can reuse the 2000 lights and plastic mounting clips. The overall fit and finish of the bumper, brackets, and valance are not too good. I guess the moral here is to use real factory parts - I just couldn't find any. :(
