ya man i had this same question a few months ago i did tons of reading and finally decided to go with the jardine kit for the 3.4 the muffler is strait threw low restriction and with a custom tailpipe i feel it dreaths really good. its not to loud even when you get on it but it made a noticable improvement not to mention it didnt coast a arm and a leg

 

Just get whatever that sounds good that fits your budget best on your truck. You will notice very little gain or loss with simple intake or exhaust mods, especially if your truck is NA. The only difference is that some cost more than others. So stop wasting time, start pulling people over, and ask them what muffler they have on their 5VZ.

 

i have lc engineering's full exhaust its a little pricy but the results are a+

and from what I've seen, and asked a few muffler shops

The vast majority reccomend either a magnaflow or flowmaster,

(I think its because they just like the tone personally)

but contrary to what some people on CT are saying is that flowmaster mufflers actually do have a pretty good flow rate and aren't just for sound either, and they have great performance (Thats what the "experts" at the muffler shops told me)

Then I did some research on the more expensive brands like borla, gibson, bassani, jardine, etc. and they pretty much just copy to some degree the same style that magnaflow has, which is just straight pipe with holes in it and stainless steel mesh surrounding the pipe in a case

Do these types of mufflers have the least backpressure for performance?
If they have no backpressure, does that mean I will suffer from a major loss of torque?

If this is case with performance, and the least backpressure is what you want, then why not go to autozone and get one of those cheap chinese made coffee can exhausts for $30 because they are just straight through?

I just want to clarify and ask a real expert like GADGET or another Toyota GURU what the "True" theory is on this whole muffler hype about getting the best performance wise with exhaust:shrug:

Well ill tell you right now that Fowmasters suck. I have them on my truck and there boring, and I didn't see any performance gain.

 

Common sense should tell you that any straight through design will let the motor breathe. So save your $$ and either buy a magnaflow, or a summit racing brand and slap it on your stock piping. Get a longer muffler for a deeper mellower tone, or get a shorter one for a louder raspier sound. Done.

 

Different muffler shops will try to sell you on a different muffler based on personal opinion and what brand they happen to sell. The simple fact of the matter is that any straight through muffler will flow more air than a chambered muffler. Magnaflow, Dynomax Ultraflo, Borla, and any of the other well known brands all make a straight through muffler that flows significantly more than chambered designs like Flowmaster, Spintech, and many of the others. As long as your exhaust tubing diameter isn't overkill for your engine (a 2RZ does not need a 3" exhaust, unless you're turbocharged, which is an entirely different story) and as long as there is some sort of muffler in the pipe, your backpressure issues will be minimal. Also consider if you're still using a catalytic converter, you've got a little backpressure there as well.

Bottom line, like Tred said, there isn't a "Best" exhaust, it's all basically personal preference. figure out if you want it loud, quiet, mellow, or raspy and obnoxious, and make your decision based on that. Personally, i'm a fan of Spintech pro streets on V8 with a nice lopey cam, but they're retardedly loud. I had them on my Fox mustang and they sounded amazing. I changed to Ultraflo mufflers and it still sounded great, but it was MUCH quieter. For 4 cylinders, i prefer a quiet muffler like an 18" magnaflow or other medium-sized straight through muffler. The straight through packed-style mufflers cut down a lot of the obnoxious 4-cylinder noise. For V6 engines, i prefer the largest straight through muffler to keep it as quiet as possible. There's just something not quite right about loud V6 exhaust IMO. But that's just it.. it's all opinion. get something that YOU like and you'll be happy.
