I use Fram PH8A filters on my 2rz and it increases the oil capacity to about 6 qts. The filter fits perfectly, was originally for a 70's or 80's F-150.

how much bigger is the 8a vs the recommended one? how much more oil does it take?

I wonder if its more about what you do with your car because I just sold my wifes (less performance) '91 celica st that had 217k miles; ran strong and ALWAYS had its oil changed at one of those quick lube places. She was always getting it changed every 3-3500 miles though so that probably helped. I bet it could have gone another 100k easy. She never opted for synthetic either...
