Well, my Garrett GT3071r turbo is failing

I have had some smoke coming from the tailpipe for some time now and just thought it was the motor, I removed the intercooler and to my displeasure I found it to have about 1/2 quart of motor oil in it due to the turbo passing oil through the compressor.

I talked to Honeywell (Garrett) and they told me to check some things, I came to the conclusion that it was just the drain tube had melted inside and was backing the oil up into the center housing.

So yesterday I removed my turbo and also took off the drain tube to replace it, they are steel braided so I couldnt see inside, when I pulled the old one off it was PERFECT inside.......not good.

When I removed the turbo I also saw some coolant coming from the center section into the turbine housing. So I now have the turbo sitting on the workbench trying to find out what is going on....

I am currently playing Email Tag with Honeywell to see what is going to happen next, the turbo has 6000 miles on it and its already failed, not to mention the Ball bearing turbos are supposed to last longer work better, etc....It also costed me $1350, so it wasnt cheap by any means, I could have bought 2 standard turbos for that price..

At this time I am getting the runaround, Honeywell says to contact the distributor (Synapse Morotsports), and Synapse says to call Honeywell, so they are playing "Hot Potato"

I am making this thread to let everyone know what happens and how Garrett handles this situation. So you know whether to buy Garrett products or at least how they take care of their customers.

What a bummer.:(

That sucks man, I hope they help you out and get you another one.

Jason what borgwarner turbo is comparable to the Garrett GT3071r???
I know Luis has to have one comparable and what is the price difference in turbos?
Super-Lame Jason.. Sounds like it was defective. Hope the situation gets resolved and they end up sending you a brand new turbo.
Yeah pretty lame. Did they at least tell you what oil restrictor you should use to ensure thats not the issue? With what I've read over time, IMO I am not going to get dual BB or ceramic bearings (what is on my turbonetics right now), just good ole fashion journal bearings and if I feel like spending money, a billet wheel w/ journal bearings like the twinscroll Borgwarner Airwerks S300SX. I would need to change my manifold to a divided one though... what to use for my log mani I still haven't fingered out, I guess the same thing, just would not use it to the full potential.
Update.....

Bad news for me, turns out that the turbocharger turbine wheel is severely damaged, when the damage occured it damaged whatever keeps oil and water from entering the housing, I was told there is no seal there, but something is "sealing " it obviously, or at least WAS sealing.

The motor spit something out and the turbo ate it long story short, turns out Garrett is not on my SH!T list after all.

I have no idea what happened or when, truck has been running fine all along except for the smoke recently, also turns out my turbo is a GT3076, not a 3071 , so I think I need to build the motor and turn up the boost.

Wierd, I ordered a 3071 but got a 3076 instead, didnt find out until I was cross referencing serial numbers, it even says GT3071 on the box.

So sorry for the false alarm guys....

I just may get a pair of those for my Camaro, not sure what was comprable, the S356? Goin' for 1000 Rwhp in the Camaro.
Sucks man. Sucked up part of a busted valve or valve seat maybe?

Well, time to build a bullet-proof motor now. :waytogo:
Yeah, what could have hit the turbine wheel? I'm thinking anything that could have caused damage to it must have come out of the engine, but you said it was running great. Maybe a piece of carbon, but I think the way you drive would prevent carbon buildup in the first place :D. Maybe spinning it too fast?

Well, I think it was from number 4 cylinder, when I did a Head gasket about 6 months ago I saw some marks on the cylinder head and piston so something was in there for a moment. I have no idea what it could have been. The cylinder looks fine, the piston was intact and the head looked fine (other than the small marks) and tests fine for compression as well, so its a mystery to me...I dont know what it was but but did it Fvck things up, I will snap a pic of my turbine wheel so you can go OMFG :eyecrazy:..
how much is it for a rebuild????? mine took a $hit too i have the same turbo lol but mine was at least 4 years old.... i just picked up a bigger precision turbo ...goin g built bottom end so need the bigger turbo...
The CHRA exchange is $525.00, pretty crazy huh?

I actually have the GT3076, so I am building that motor I got for higher boost, shooting for 21psi, that should be ideal for this turbo, but I can always turn it up a little if I need to.

HOw much boost are you going to run?
i have the 76 also....im gonna build it so it can handle 25psi or more lol want a motor that can handle lol
ouch. i want to see pics. im gonna be taking apart my turbo this week to put a new compressor wheel on. she spools up good, course i dont have a ball bearing turbo, yet. i can dream of a garrett 38R :D
That really sucks Jason. Ha that's funny that they gave u the GT3076R. That makes me a little happier cuz that's the turbo I'm gonna use and at least now I know it spools up quick, plus from what I've been told it can flow up to 25psi without producing too much heat.
well that settles it, Im going EBAY china turbo :D :looney:

so basically your not going to get a new turbo for free because it was your motors fault?

that blows

Well actually, it no longer blows cuz it got hurt while sucking... :nana:
I take it you are not running a cat either. If so I suppose whatever that chunk was, it would have wrecked the cat by now.
