What does a base model 04 5 lug need for basic trailer wiring to be installed?

A trip to the Beefed garage.
Having the basic wires helps, then put them in the truck

lol you always have a way to shed light on a topic
Jeff (Tillers) is actually right ... What you have is what you basically need for starters - a stock wiring setup in good condition.

The main thing you still need is a decent tow wiring harness kit compatible with your 2001 - 2004 Taco and a good installation, such as the one illustrated in this video:

http://www.etrailer.com/tv-wiring_install_2000_toyota_tacoma.aspx

( ... and some modest bonus points are due whomever first identifies why this writeup ("Wiring Harness Installation - 2000 Toyota Tacoma") is definitely applicable to DMonkey's 2004 .... )
Thanks for that link Randy
Are the prerunner/4wd and 2wd frames REAR section different from each other:shrug:

Hence adding a tow package(hitch) from a 4wd/prerunner...

Just an idea, I'm pretty sure they are but worth the thought..

For 1995.5 - 2004, the answer is basically 'no' on the rearmost frames being different. 5-lug and 6-lug pre-2005 Tacomas use the same bumpers and body parts in the rear. Moving forward from the rear bumper, the first place you'd run into any differences would be at the rear suspension mounts / rear axle.

I'm not sure about 2005+ models in general, but there's one that most definitely has tow hitch issues - the X-Runner, because of its X-Brace.

Branden go to pep-boys and go to the towing isle, and if it's in stock for our Taco's, they'll have a sweet $45 kit that T's into the tail lights. You simply remove your rear tails from the body, unplug them, and T in the new kit. It'll most likely come with a flat 4 prong plug for the trailer, but I'm not a fan of those because they're not as easy to mount as a round 6 prong plug. (which will require buying the male and female 6 prong if you decide to go this route) This wire kit is the best way to go. :waytogo:

What are you planning on towing?
I always hooked mine 4 prone on the little hook on the back side of the stock bumper when not in use. (98 taco)
but I had a valley hitch and a advanced auto kit. Worked great for years.
With a hitch the max tow is 5000 lbs or 2500 off of the bumper.
Brian, depending on what happens, i may be hitting you up for a hidden hitch.

Johnny, I'm movin up to the stanislaus area (south of modesto) for school and i have access to one of those small home depot trailers, i need to move a dresser, huge guitar amp/ cabinet, and a king size bed. 388 miles

I'm going to try and get my jeep where I can tow it with that because the jeep likes to run on the freeway for the trailer speed limit anyway. but worse case scenario, i'll be lookin at haulin that small trailer with the taco.
Wow... one bad decision to the next...
