To everyone into desert racing..

Lately I have been kind of curious what it takes to turn one of our tacos into a full blown desert racing/trophy truck. The amount of labor, the price, and the parts needed. Sometime in the future I want to do it to my truck and I was wondering what it would take.

money, lots of it. unless you do it yourself, the price will be in the tens of thousands of dollars. high end prerunners/trophy trucks are several hundred thousand. not a cheap sport by any means...
the front end alone will cost any where from 5-10k the rear will run you the same. then you get into caging it wheels and tires will be expenseive as your gonna wanna run 35-37s. shocks are not cheap by any means engine modification either.like nancy said, its mot cheap
like posted above. front end can cost about 4k-10k depend on the route you go. Rear suspension is about 3k-10k depending on the route. Dont know if you plan to do the work your self if you do and have tools just materials figure 1500-3k depending on material type for a full bumper to bumper cage. if you plan to send it to a shop iv gotten quotes from 4k-8k just for a cab cage expect to pay more if you want to do an engine and bedcage also. Any engine mods you want. But depending on the race series you want to race expect to be around 30K+ depending on cost of original truck and what your plans are. but basic 1400/1450 truck like a tacoma is going to be alot cheaper then something like a trophytruck 100k+ unless you plan to build it your self. theres alot of things you need to add in.gps, race radio, intercom, seats, belts, helmets, pumpers, dash, gauges im sure there's a lot im missing but all that stuff adds up very fast.

your not suppose to roll.:D Technically with the right design you should be able to get by with mild. Iv seen it done in trucks built and how they hold up in a rollover. But you guys are Saying TT. Ye,s he did say the work trophy truck. But the main part of his question is how much does it cost to build a tacoma into a race truck/TT. Thing is if your shooting for a TT you would not start with a tacoma. You would go with a full Chromoly chassis. Usually built at a shop that has the jig table to build a rolling chassis.:waytogo:

EDIT:A perfect example of a mild steel cage in a toyota truck. That was one of Helton old trucks. Dont know if you guys know who Helton is. Well I know Some of the old timers here that have been in the sport know who he is.

honestly it would be cheaper to just buy a TT. they have them on race-dezert.com. but if your talking like a 1450 then probably around 20-30k plus the price of the truck :waytogo:
best deal on a TT would be buy a rolling chassis off race-dezert and build the rest your self.

really? all that **** adds up, ecspecilly if you use real quility and dont cut corners
Heltons old truck isnt that good of an example given the suspension setup didn't allow him to go over 50 mph. Vances' old yota would be a good example because that thing was mild steel and he hauled ass as usual in it. Than again, what grade mild steel are we talking about here? I have DOM cage front to back in my truck and that's mild.

true, alot of prerunners are build with DOM which is technically a mild steel. But basic cheap mild steel with a seam. Like the Rent a race truck by JSI
if you don't, you're not driving correctly...
