The taillight grounding scheme changed effective with 2001(?). This causes problems, because cross-generational swapping will work OK in one direction, but not the other.
Unfortunately, I don't remember whether it's the later versions that don't work 'as is' on the earlier Tacos, or vice versa.
If you run into the grounding mismatch problem, it may be impossible to overcome it without doing some in-depth surgery on the taillight pods and wiring.
Had a buddy do this with another friend before he sold his truck. they swapped lights. And yes, like said above the lights can go backwards not forwards.
Meaning you can take the 01-04 tail lights and put them on the 96-00 tacos but you cant in return take your trucks tails and put them on the 01-04 truck....like Enola said they will not work properly on that vehicle.
