RR Diff light coming on?

1511 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Chris D.
The light for my rear differential keeps coming on. They weird thing is its not lighting up all the way like the differential is engaged but its half way lit. It takes a couple of times of engaging and disengaging the differential and the light will finally go off all the way. Any ideas of what might be going on? This is the second time within a week that its done this

My first guess would be a fault (short; bad ground; whatever) in the rear differential lock detection switch or the associated wiring.

On the other hand ... It could be a symptom of a problem with the actual engagement mechanism.
Any idea how I could diagnose the problem?
First off - here (attached) is the 1999 rear differential lock wiring diagram.

If the e-locker is (mechanically) functioning OK, and the only weirdness is the indicator light, my first 'suspect' would be the detection switch (illustrated on the first page of the diagram).

Did this problem begin after running through something (snow, mud, water) that could have left material on or around the e-locker? If so - I'd start by inspecting the e-locker area for crud that could be causing a short (or otherwise messed-up wiring / connections).

well its been a while since I've run though any deep mud or water. I did engage it the other day when everything was wet to see how well I could power brake lol
could be something as simple as a bad bulb..
I have one that would go out once and a while then (bam) on the dash, turns right on.. its been completely burnt out for a while now..
