Alright, i bought my amp and sub (Thanks everyone who helped). But now that its time to install it i have ran into a problem running the wires from the stock radio to the amp. I talked to a friend and he said i needed a new radio. Is there any way to hook an amp to the stock radio or am i just going to have to buy a new radio?

If your amp has speaker inputs, then no. If it only takes RCA inputs, then you may be able to get speaker line to RCA adapter. Seems like I saw an adapter on Crutchfield, not sure. Sure is cheaper than replacing the head unit.
You will need a line output converter. 20 bucks from crutchfield, however it should be cheaper if you can find it local.

There's nothing wrong with running the stock headunit. I'd still be running mine if it didn't break. 8-(
Ya. The stock one is totaly fine. And what a relief it is to not have to pay for a new head unit. Im going to mob over to the audio store and get all the wires and stuff and install it as soon an i can. But im pretty sure ill have a ton more questions lol.
what is he supposed to do with that ?

...and no, you cannot splice those into the speaker outputs of the head unit without risking damage to both the head unit onboard amplifier, or the preamp section of the amp. i have seen and repaired the damage of boneheads that try.

that would work, but those are pretty horrible. spend a little more for a better one. hint... Crutchfield is extremely expensive on everything.

you would be surprised to know, that for slightly more than what you are about to spend for a line output converter, i can get you a new Pioneer ipod controller.

for example, this:

i had a bad experience with running a sub with my stock headunit..long story short, i took my truck to a shop for a simple amp and sub install and 20minutes after i left, my dashboard caught on fire and over half of my wire harness melted away. i never could figrue out why, but it just double check all your wires before you turn that key
ID, if I were you I'd take Dave's advice he definitely knows what he's talking about.

If i bought the ipod controller how easy would it be to hook that to the sound system already in the truck

You can by a conversion from a local shop to make your stock radio work but i would recomend a new one. Aftermarket radios have better equalizers and more accessories its possible to hook an ipod up but the sound quality want be as good. Ebay is a great place to find a radio they do not come with responsible warranties most of the time but great if u jus need a cheap quick fix

i have no idea what you are talking about. you want to keep the stock radio ? the factory radios in Tacomas sound horrible... mine spent 6 days in my truck when it was new, before it was replaced with a real stereo.

the unit i posted pictures of replaces it. it is not only an ipod controller, but AM/FM/CD/MP3/ACC/ipod/etc/etc/etc, and sound better than the factory unit by around 1,000,000 %.

ebay is too expensive for me... :D and you are correct, only a few of us sellers offer a warranty.

So, next question lol. I keep finding diffrent answers for the audio wiring code for my 99 tacoma. Im just looking for the 4 rear + - wires but when i looked at the speakers in the back of the truck the wires were the same color on both sides.
Thy should be this:

Rear Right:

Red +
White -

Rear Left:

Black +
Yellow -
They could be that color comming out of the head unit. I hope they are. But when i took off the 2 rear speaker pannels the 2 wires going up to each speaker were blue and grey, on the right and left sides.
Interesting ...

The same-colored wiring on your rear speakers would seem to be non-factory. In 1999 the 4-speaker stereo system could be ordered as a standalone option, so yours might have been installed at the port or dealership.

Here (attached) is the 1999 radio / stereo wiring diagram. Out at the rear speakers you should be seeing white and white wires (passenger / right side) and black and yellow wires (driver / left side) if they were factory-installed.

THATS AMAZING! After attacking the internet for 2 hours for that diagram and not finding it...POOF here it is. Ill rip out my radio again and see if thoes colors are comming out of the HU.
