high output alternator HELP

I am going to be upgrading to a high output alternator and was wondering if I had to upgrade the fuse betweent the battery and alternator. It is a 120amp fuse right now. I am also doing the big 3 upgrade and wanted to know if i had to add a fuse the the new wire that will match the new alternator. Thanks...Mike

honestly, you should really read up on this subject or have a shop do it because it really doesnt seem like you know what youre doing and you could seriously damage things or possibly not even make the most of that HO alt

As far as what you asked....just leave the factory fused wires and add a 0ga fused lead directly from the alternator to the battery.
The issue with HO alt is that they die out faster. Depending on how tight there wound they life span can be a few years. But for doing a powerful system with additional draws on the electrical they are a must do.

Now my question is the new HO come with there own regulator right? How does this affect the factory ECU? Is there any issue?
Off-hand, I don't remember anyone mentioning upgrading their fuses / fusible links when doing an HO generator upgrade. This is why I recommended the OP post the question to the forums.

There shouldn't be any effect on the ECM, because the regulator regulates the voltage level.
What about the GM alternator swap?
That's always an option, but it has nothing to do with the OP's central question (whether fuses / fusible links need to be upgraded).

I recommend using zero ga wire. Cimped + soldered and then heat shrunk.

Find the current rating of whatever wire you end up using, and use a fuse rated slightly less.

Make sure you fuse it as soon as the new alt goes in, its a guaranteed fire if the wire ever shorts out.

Which alt did you end up getting? I plan on doing the cs144 gm alt. It seems like an easy swap for a decent price. All the toyota specific alternators seemed too expenive and the housings are somewhat small.

I havnt got the alternator yet, still looking and deciding what i am going to do. Considering getting the gm alt, but i know you have to do a small adjustment or something to get it to fit.
talk to dc power inc. on an high output alt. There in Riverside also so it's kind of local

That's where I got mine and it's super nice. Kinda expensive but it's worth it.
