HELP!!!! Truck won't idle after battery disconnected

34949 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  BROWNBAGG
I had my battery disconnected(both terminal clamps disconnected) for about 20 mins. or more and when I reconnected and went to start it and it died as soon as it start up. Tried to start again and just cranked. I then gave it gas while cranking and it started up, but now it won't idle correctly(idling at like 4000 to 5000). It's start up with out giving it gas now but idle drops right away to 4000 to 5000. I don't know what the eff happened, I didn't mess with or disconnect anything else besides the battery. Please help. Truck is an 08 tacoma 2.7l 4spd auto. TIA

have the batter hooked up and turn the car to the on possition (without turning the car on) and just let it sit for a little and try cranking it again.

sometimes it just takes some time to reset

Thank you for the quick reply, I will try that out. I'm also letting it cool down completely beforeI try it again.
You pretty much reset the computer. Now your truck is going to be on a learning curve for about 500 miles and idling until it finds it's sweet spot.
Why were the battery terminals disconnected?

Were you doing some sort of modification or repair? If so - what?

Do you have any aftermarket modifications or add-ons?
4000 or 400? 4000 is high as ish...

sounds like a vacuum leak to me.
Whenever I undo my battery terminals, my truck idles low for a while and is a bit shy on power until it reprograms itself. It always returns to normal though.

i agree that it sounds like typical computer reset/relearn symptoms after battery disconnect, put a couple hundred miles on it and you ecu will learn how to operate your truck again, lol

That's the first thing I figured, but it kept wanting to die on me when I let off the gas, just didn't seem right. Also all the other cars I've dealt with that I've had the battery disconnected on longer than that, the ECU never let the engine get that low in the rpms at idle after being disconnect for a lot longer time than what I had mine disconnected for. This isn't the first time I had the battery disconnected on my truck for 20+ mins and it didn't act like this before.

I had the terminals off because I was redoing some wiring to my stereo and I was also checking some of the ABS circuit (I am planning to do an ABS disable mod). I did not cut into any wires or modify anything(yet), I just unplugged the connector to the ABS ECU, besides redoing the sh!TTy stereo wire job I let my friend do cause he was so eager to do it. Nothing was added or changed. All I have done as far a mods go are k&n intake, pioneer headuint, dynomax muffler, white gauge leds; all which have been on the truck long before this occurrence.

Also, when I said in the first post I didn't disconnect anything besides the battery, I meant to say "besides the battery that would affect it starting or running" ie. Engine Control Unit or any wiring to the engine.

400 aha sorry:looney:
I should really proof read my ish before I submit it.

Yulp everything is going back to normal, just took a little longer than I thought it would to relearn the idle.

Thanks for all the input guys! :waytogo:. I kind of regret even making this thread, I feel dumb now and should have know better really.:selfbonk:

When I unhook my battery, then hook it back up, I have to instantly go up a little hill and it's shy on power for about 10 seconds, but then the rest of the 9.7 miles is kind of down hill freeway and I go about 62-65 mph , and when I arrive at the signal after getting off the freeway,it idles low for about 10 seconds, then goes to normal and things are normal from there again.
clean your throttle body!!! When the throttlebody is dirty and the ecu loses its learned values, the engine will idle very low.
i have done this many time,

diconnect battery couple minutes
pull parking brake ( must do this)
turn a/c on (to increase idle)
i also turn on headlight, flasher, dome light, i want the alt to make the engine idle up.

ok crank motor let idle for at least thirty minute, dont touch anything
motor will relearn.

think about it, the engine has less than 500 miles when purshase, the dealer not going let the vehicle die at every light, same with mechanic shop.

you dont have to drive 500 cycle, thats a joke

if it doesnt work, pull air filter, that will force computer to learn, and when you replace the air filter the computer will adjust itself
