Help? G1/G3 PnP projector lights...broken tightening nut

5318 Views 50 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Chris D.
Hello CT
Anyone of you guys that has installed the G1/G3 projector retrofit ever snapped the nut that secures the projector to the light housing? I have temporarily fixed the problem by zip tying around the nut/ring. My question is, where can I buy another one or can I buy something at a hardware store that will work. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Are you just missing the nut, or ... ???

The nut is not missing...I over tighten the nut and it snapped/cracked. This is the nut that secures the projector light housing from behind the factory light housing.
take it to a fastener store or something..

you must have really been wrenching on it..
maybe go to home depot and see what they have in the electrical section where the conduit is, they usually have nuts around that size that "mite" work for ya..

F8CKKKKK! I JUST DID THE SAME THING.

I just went to home depot, they have no conduit rings that are the right size, they only come in 1" and 1.25" which is too small/big respectively. I'm so pissed right now, and I don't know how I'm going to get new rings. DO NOT USE A WRENCH OR CHANNEL LOCKS TO TIGHTEN THESE!!!! Hand tight is good enough, if you are that paranoid then put some green loctite on the threads.
Oh dam dude.. yeah, hand tight is all I'd do with it..

any pictures of the nut? I think these are aluminum, no?

Yeah, they seem like aluminum, no pics but the grooved areas are the thinnest part and it cracked right down the center of one of the grooves. I'm trying to get them from someone on HID planet now.
wow, I just looked at mine... holy crap, there isn't much there..
after they run the threads through them.. its paper thin..

I'm going to take the locking nut to a few places
tomorrow and see what I can come up with for you guys..

Thanks Chris, let me know if you come up with anything. If you do, let me know if I can get them locally and if not I'll pay you to send me some.
I'm going to be calling machine shops while you look around... sigh.
think of what a nut looks like, then imagine it cracked..
If I get a hold of a machine shop who will do it, I'll take a pic once it's removed from the projector. Now all I will have to worry about is dancing to get my projector tightened while it's inside the headlight and I can't grab it from the inside to hold it while I tighten the ring.. that's going to be fun. :brickknoc :runaway:
Do the housing of the projector kick any light backwards against where the the headlight housing in my case was orignally chrome?

FYI..

Not really. Yeah, see where the grooves are, it split right down the middle of one of the wider grooves... lots of weak points.
The thinnest part of the ring is where my locking ring broke too. I do not know why that ring was designed like that...I fixed it by buying the strongest epoxy i can find at the hardware store and glued it back together. I also epoxied the remainder grooves at the thinnest part and backed it up with a zip tie. So far no issues.

Hey if you find a machine shop that will make you a locking ring let me know. i'd be in for an extra one or two!
Use electrical tape and wrap it around the nut about 10 times. That should make it more dense while you tighten it snug.

or you can sand around the nut and build it up with plastic fusion, which is like epoxy but is a plastic acrylic.
