Gearing Question

Ok so if a speedometer off 6.7% too fast, your doin 65ish and your speedo shows 70, can you go to a smaller reduction in the 3rd member to compensate for it?

I dont know what stock 2rz gears are in the diff, but if you could get one smaller, would the same 6.7% hold true, such as the gear ratio produces x amount of wheel rpm for y amount of engine rpm so by changing the gearing you can adjust the amount of wheel rpm for engine rpm, would that be a 6.7% decrease in gear ratio or what?

I'm not a math major or a master mechanic.. is this possible?

i figure having a smaller ratio in the rear would help utilize 1st and 2nd in a turbo situation too

You'd want to increase (edit: woops, I meant decrease) your final drive by 6.7% (or so) to get you back to stock. And yeah, turbos like taller gearing.

if the 4cyl gears are 3.58

would this be an accurate formula?

3.58-(3.58x.067)

which would be 3.34

or am i thinkin about this wrong?

Good math, yeah, I think that's it.
The only problem I think you are going to run into is finding that exact ring gear ratio......I don't think you will find anything taller than a 3.42, which will only be about a 4.5% decrease. It will get you close, but not exactly. Probably not enough to notice at around town speeds, like 45mph or less, but once you get up to highway speeds there will be a more noticeable difference.

About the only other thing you can do is change your tire size to something with a slightly taller sidewall.

If you put in some 3.42's, and get tires that are probably one, (maybe two), size bigger, you should probably be really close.

I have a 3.42 in my truck now, that I'll be pulling out soon......if you're interested.
thanks for the reply, bigger will not really fit my application because i'm dropped.. I look at the cost of regearing, and looked at the cost of the dakota digital recalibrator, i think i'm going to go that route.. it looks like it installs easy from the PDF and i can adjust it again if i ever decided to go completely different and put on 31s or something
