Gear swap in a 5 lug?

6803 Views 26 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  afd23a
I have a 08' 2.7L 5 lug base model with the ready lift. Is there any possible way to have the stock 3rd member modified to install different gears and possibly a electric or air locker? I read that someone used a ford rear end, but I was hoping to keep the original one. Thanks for any info.

You shouldn't have to modify the 3rd member at all to transplant gears compatible with your OEM differential.

If you want a locker, you're looking at a total differential swap-out.

I'm not sure what would be required to transplant an OEM 2005+ locker into your 2008 5-lugger.
The LSD from the X-Runner will fit but not the gears. As for gearing, there is a gearing thread that I believe was started by Tacobrumz that talks about gearing our 05+ trucks.

why would u want to mod the 3rd member? u can buy gear for the 3rd...IE 4.10 4.33 4.56 ect ect the rear is a 8.4 and is found in many older tacomas and T100s
i got my first set from eastcoastgears.com ..they dont list them on the site as tacoma but if you call them they will be able to help u out

i dont think he would be able to transplant a locker from another tacoma because the 05+ trd tacomas with lockers have a diffrent rear end....but he can buy a locker for the 8.4 ...it would be aftermarket though
There is something in tacobrumz thread about Xrunner gears not shimming up right in our rear ends. As for his locking issues the options are as follows, LSD from an X, ARB, a ratcheting, fully locked, or hillbillying it and welding the spiders together. If he's multi talented he could go to a pick-n-pull and yank a 6 lug with the e-locker and then swap over the hubs from his to the new. That way he's not fully locked for street use to conserve on MPG's but is still able to lock them up for those critical moments, I.E. bustin some decent broadies in the rain or taking her off road.
Thanks for the input. It looks like I will get an ARB. Right now u get the compressor for free when u buy one. Im hoping that maybe I can get a used 3rd with 3.73s or 4.10s already and I will put in the locker in it myself. Most 4x4 sites want to sell you 4.56 gears or higher so maybe I can get a whole rear end at a junkyard. Either that or get a built 3rd with the locker for @ $1400.
I drive on 99% pavement, but the times Ive gotten stuck in the state forest or up my driveway in snow really piss me off.

diffrent rear ends....wont work
Cody read the whole post. I talk about switching hubs from a 5 lug to the 6 lug. Its quite possible to machine adapters. If he's already looking to spend 1400 he can get an elocked full rear end for around 750-800 bucks at a junk yard. Gear it and hub it with the rest.

The sylanoids on the locker use both a power on to engage the locker and a power on to disengage. In the sense that a signal engages the locker and then another signal disengages it.

that would be retarted!!! u can get gears and a locker for the 8.4 for less than 800 and no mickey mouse adapters.........u always want to take stuff of the 6 lugs and try and make them fit ..... just to save a few dollars

you would be suprised at just how well a set of snow tires work.. :waytogo:
all season radials just don't cut it..

A beafier rear end over or smaller 5 lug that's a tuff decision. And since when is billet aluminum a mickey mouse adaptor? And honeslty I think the 6lug hubs are a 4 bolt just like our 5lug hubs. Ill take a look at my friends 6 lug and see what I find. And ur talking about just parts and an always locked locker. Not a switchable which drains on mpg's and wear and tear of the rear end. And like I've said not all of us are ballers like u cod. We just don't have money to be blowing out our asses.

And ihere we go again. Ur ex got rid of u again didn she? I'm sorry man but u've really got to stop taking ur relationship issues out on me.
Show me the post that are mickey mouse. And having more bills than I make? First off that isn't something to be proud of, second off u have more bills than the IRS knows that I make.

Either way u win cod! Ur the man! U know it all! Go get'em!

To bring this back to topic yet again, an arb with 4.10's should work just fine. Plenty of space under the bed on the frame to make a compressor mount. What tires do u plan to run for the regear?
U don't need to regear for 31's. I mean at speeds under 50 the motor struggled abit in 5th but over all its not an issue with that size of tire.
with 31 the most i would do would be 4.10 ... but its not really needed but since ur putting a locker in u might as well do ur gears while u have it opened up if mney aint an issue
I post more over on tacomaworld, but check in on here every now and again.

If you want to regear, I second not going any higher than 4.10. Maybe even 3.73's from a v6 taco. But I would regear if running 31" tires. FYI, the 4cyl prerunners come with 31" (245/75/16) tires and they run 4.10 gears.

As far as traction help an ARB air locker is probably the more expensive, but probably the most highly regarded locker out there for tacomas. You could also go with a lunchbox locker like a powertrax no slip or, if you want an LSD, the detroit truetrac or Eaton LSD. The 6 lug E-locker has a smaller ring gear and has been prone to failure on some trucks that get wheeled hard. Also, it won't fit in the 8.4 axle housing. The elocker third member has a different bolt pattern, so unless you want to fab something up, it won't work easily.

If you want to find out more about the tacoma gears check out http://gearinstalls.com/ for lots of great info, especially if you are planning on doing it yourself

You sure they run 4.10 gears on the 05+?
