I just tried the same thing with mine, and just as a warning, it does looks less orange, but it just looks like faded orange. I had mine swapped, but before putting things back together i went back to the orange cause it looks better.

Here's a photo of a 2001 - 2004 cluster after the orange-tinted covers / 'condoms' are removed from the OEM bulbs.
I don't think we've ever had an illustration of this approach's result before. Most photos illustrate bulb swap-outs.
The TTORA poster says the actual color is less 'orange-ish' than this photo would indicate.
