Fuel cells - plastic vs. metal casing

besides the risk of them melting and blowing up your truck, is there any reason why metal cased cells are more popular? the plastic ones are considerably cheaper, so you'd think more folks would run them...

OEM is metal. If you think about keeping the fuel cold in the sun, maybe a metal tank would be better. When I think about it I think of one of those solar showers RVers use. They are black plastic and they sure heat up water well.

not all OEM tanks are metal...
The ultimate in protection would be the bladder-style cells, but they're more expensive.

The problem with metal cells is that they're rigid, and can 'break' from stresses more readily than a really high-quality hard plastic unit.

It's interesting that in this _Off Road_ article on the 3 different kinds of fuel cells:

... the all-metal aluminum types are the only ones mentioned with regard to possible failures.
what truck you planning to put it in? if its your gray primered one id say go with plastic with a metal can. dont know thats what is required for desert racing. metal cans are more for stock cars things like that. i almost bought a metal cell but it would not be race legal. not that i planned to race but wanted to be legal just incase.
If the application is off-roading I think I'd go with a bladder-within-metal or a plastic cell, with an all-metal one being my last choice.

I'd also recommend getting the interior foam - to help with the stresses of sloshing fuel.
My Camaro uses a 32 gallon fuel cell in the trunk, it is a seetmetal casing with a Poly cell inside, it isrequired for racing in certain classes for extra protection beyond a standard poly tank without sheet metal shielding.

It simply helps with puncture resistance, harder to puncture a tank with a metal casing, usually easier to mount as well..

a couple of pics of my tank.

of course. the reason i asked is because i saw that JAZ makes plastic cells, with the foam inside, for a lot cheaper than a metal cased unit. just wanted to get some feed back for a low dollar, high quality cell, for people that don't plan on building a race legal truck.
Swapmeet or Racedezert you can get a 20-32 gallon cell for $200 or less. Dont even ask this question Albert. Just do it right and save up all the pennies for the one that should be ran.

i plan on getting on there if the price is right, but that's not the point. i was just wondering if the plastic ones were a cheaper alternative to those who arent planning on racing.

and it's sold. hopefully you bought it and will sell to me for a cheap price! :doah:

I didnt buy it but see them all day long. Plastic and a rock is a no good combo. Just get the RIGHT one with plastic bladder and metal shroud over it to be safe. No need to know info on anything else out there.
Thats not a bad price.with that red one you will have to had a third AN bulkhead for a fuel return but thats super easy to do. Then a fuel sending unit at the same time pretty easy to do all so. An bulk head is about 5bucks at G and J or even US hose on grove may be cheaper 225 is about about what i have into mine and it looks like crap cause i pieced it together

Return can just be tapped into the filler neck aluminum piece.
pick it up yesterday! thanks for the heads up jerry!
