Started yesterday, today is day 2

So plans are (hopefully anyways) to become the first Xrunner with a shaved A**, minus the tailgate handle. Gonna try to take as many pictures as possible during the build so heres to a good time with metal!

Day 1 - Few hours of work nothing major. Tore down the back end. Lights are out and bumper is off. Got a cardboard template made for the tail lights. Rough cut some metal for one side and trimmed to size.

Lights arrived today as well (good timing on their part)

Some may hate it some may like it but im doing it for self satisfaction and uniqueness. Plans are to weld the pockets shut and then flush mount these in their place. One light per side. Next step is the rollpan. Thanks goes out to lenie and her build thread on top of the advice she gave for the skirts. Rollpan will be straight with no plate and have the reverse light dead center in it. Next step is the license plate box recessed into the tailgate underneath the Xrunner logo. 11 days to do it in. LMAO. Sounds rough but it will be an all day task so it will have plenty of hours into it for just 11 days. Gives me more then 80 hours to learn what is needed and make it work.

Ill take pics as much as possible to keep this thread going!

Tomorrows agenda. Cut left side metal blank out and start shaping the two

Day 2 progress

Left side filler 90% complete. Needs a hair more curve at the bottom and then trimmed/flanged. Right side filler 60% done.

Torn down

Rough cut on metal after paper and cardboard templates were made

Curved left-right roughly to shape and next is shrinking to get the up-down curve going

Ran into a snag with getting more metal funds were lower then expected so the rollpan may take longer then I wanted, reverse light may end up going into tailgate. Once both sides are done and ready to weld ill be making the buckets to fit the leds in since they are way to flat to flush mount on my hard curve bed side

True she does have a rollpan and there are a small handful with those. Now tell me how many you have seen with shaved lights as well? Only 1 new gen taco that I know of.

Not to much done today unfortunately. Backs starting to act up again so the planishing hammer was definetly not my friend. LOL

This shot was taken before the piece was cleaned up some

Went back in to add the bottom and side flange (tailgate side). Come to find out 3 different bends plus 2 different flange bends dont like each other lol. Might end up trimming the bottom flange off and tig welding it in place so I can keep a nice curvature

I was looking at the new owners profile on SSM and the first pic I posted was when gumby owned it I believe. Newer pic (below) i think was the owners shot. Can you show me a different one? I can see tail lights still in this shot which I believe is newer but you may have a shot I dont know of :)

Even in this newer shot (look at the wheels even) this was after the new owner reworked some of the truck and you can see the bulge from the tail lights. Either way its a badass truck dont get me wrong. The new owner hand fabbed parts for it but didnt see any updated shots of shaved tails

Thanks bud. More updates for today. Went a little slow since I was helping my buddy on his coupe and taking my time. hes in the process of recessing the headlights.
Flanges are done pieces are 99% done as well. Left side needs the bottom cut off and right needs the top bit cut off. Then comes the grinding and welding :)

Mondays agenda is to cut out inner hole where the wiring comes in to have an 'access' to the new lights. Also mocking up new lights to start creating the bucket for the light to sit in

Testing the fit on both sides

Flanged inner piece for fitment

Monday should get about 8 hrs of work done doing this task...

Interesting mod! Thats one of never seen. One more thing, that white swaybar looking thing under your bed? Does that strengthen the rear? I have some ideas about doing that to my 97.

Just dirty silver. LOL Yeah that dudes the only one ive found or seen that has any type of tails other then stock/ebays. Thanks bud
I believe that DOT requires a side reflector at front and tail. Is this a concern but it looks like a good project. Keep up with the updates
Unsure of that one 100%. I know ive seen many trucks with cadillac tail light conversions and not one has ever mentioned tickets for that. Then again not everyone shares that type of info. Its something I will look into thanks. Oklahoma doesnt do any inspections on vehicles so that might be what saves me :D
The Oklahoma motor vehicle equipment laws can be accessed at:

http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/index.asp?ftdb=STOKST47&level=1

A quick scan shows only the following specification for taillights:

Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer and pole trailer, and any vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two tail lamps mounted on the rear, on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable which, when lighted, shall emit a red light visible from a distance of one thousand (1,000) feet to the rear

http://www.oscn.net/applications/OCISWeb/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=82384
... which doesn't address side reflector requirements (e.g., visibility).

However, the Oklahoma law also states:

The United States Department of Transportation specifications and standards for headlamps, auxiliary driving lamps, tail lamps, signal lamps, reflectors, and other lighting equipment and signal devices, pursuant to 49 C.F.R., Section 571.108, are hereby adopted by the State of Oklahoma.

http://www.oscn.net/applications/OCISWeb/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=82381
... and these federal standards do make requirements for side visibility of red reflectors in the rear. These federal side-reflector visibility requirements were among the main reasons 'altezza' style tails remained illegal until Toyota demonstrated the first (Lexus) clear tails that met the requirements.
