ok well this thing has been buggin me and now i cant take it any more!!!

ok the truck is a 96 tacoma 2rz

the water pump pulley it making some kind of a noise, almost like a rattle, i have taking the fan off (PITA BTW!!!) and tryed tryed it like that, with just the pully and no fan to see if it shut up,, but no.. it didnt, i have the nuts as tight as i can, and it wont be as loud for a little but but you can hear it coming back.... now.. i cant crank down on them because the stud on the water pump it threaded on both sides... and for SOME DUMB REASON if you run the stud all the way into the water bump they stick out far enough on the other side to strike the water bump housing it self..... so how do i go about this... this has to be easy, i am just missing it...

if anyone has run into this PLEASE help me out on this one:selfbonk:

Cut down the stud several mm?
yea i was thinking about that... but how does it work right for so long the BAM...... noise..... but yea.. i thought about that lastnight too:runaway:
maybe its time to replace the water pump? I think its a $40 part, and maybe a dozen 12mm nuts & bolts.

I wish you could post a recording of the sound for easier ID.

That's what I'm thinking - unless you're damned certain the sound is coming from the water pump pulley alone ...
well i took the power st belt off and it was still there, the A/c belt is still on but the noise is higher than anything related to a/c, i can tighten the nuts on the water pump pully and but i see the stud turn, and ill start it up and the sound will be quiter, but then it will start to come back... so i think its just the fact the studs are too long... ill try it when i get off.... if the rain stops :selfbonk:

the issue i think is that if i tighten thm up too much the studd hits the water pump housing, if there too loose the pulley wiggles and make s the noise:shrug:
Heat shield on exhaust may be cracked at the area the bolts hold it on and will vibrate and make noises...mine is.
it could be a the heat shield... i know one of the bolts is borken.. but the sound is coming from the front of the engine.. i guess it be eckoing... hmmm

i hate noises.. it makes your truck sound like a POS!:brickknoc

very possible, i mean there's nothing under there but hard surfaces for sounds to reflect off of, it is very difficult to pinpoint sounds under the hood sometimes

ok well.... i took the water pump studs out and cut them down so there is no way they will ever touch the water pump housing, and i tighten them as tight as i could. but the noise is still there.

i have really tryed to listen and see when the noise happens,

it is silent on cold start ups, not even the fantest sound.. but as the truck starts to warm up you can hear it coming in, untill its at full knock, but i dont want to call it a knock because its not one like i have ever herd, my 3rz in my 4x4 taco has a little piston slap when its cold but goes away after a few seconds at idle, but that sounds like a small hammer on a metal sound... the one my 2rz is making is duller and it doesnt really match engine speed, but it does change with engine speed, also it does a constant fade in and out. this one has me stumped and ideas from you guys out there would be GREAT!!:confused::(:selfbonk:

ok well i THINK i have found it.... the water pump had some play in it, and when shook by hand it made a fant verson of the sound i was hereing, so i just so happend to have the origanal engine sitting in my shed and since the new water pumps are right pricey and i was still not 100% sure that it was the problem i swapped the pump off the other motor onto the one in the truck. it has about 35K more miles on it but it worked like a charm, i guess the one in the truck had sat in the junk yard with no water in it, so the seals went bad and the bearing went bad???? idk.. i dont really care... but the sound is gone, i will replace the current pump when i rebuild my truck funds some but for now this one will do!!!:runaway:
My water pump made some crappy noises when it went bad.
yup they will make some noises when they go out...

You (or someone) put the studs in backward, they are shorter on one side....:waytogo:
