distributor install

I am letting this distributor whip my ass . I may be over thinking the situation but its killing me . My issue is , I keep getting the P0336 code so I have it narrowed down to either the distributor or crank position sensor . the manual says to line up the notched gear with the notch on the distributor so I have installed the dis. but naturally the pitch of the gear makes it slide in and is no longer notch to notch . I have also backed it up a tooth and installed it , which would make the notches lined up while its installed . Could someone please verify 100% which install is correct , it runs great either way but to get the code to go away the dis. needs to be in the correct tooth . I will put an oscilliscope on once I have it correct . thanks Shane

sounds like you got the dist on right... put the crank at TDC, rotate the distributor gear a hair forward so that as you slide the distributor into the hole, the rotar slides back to #1 position. i've done it a dozen times, definatly second guessed myself a couple times too, but it sounds like you have it right.
Here's what the FSM says, and the attachment provides the FSM illustration of how the alignment is supposed to look ....

DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION

1. CHECK NO–1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION

If necessary, remove the cylinder head cover, and check the following conditions:

(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise and align its groove with the timing mark ”0” of the oil pump cover.

(b) Verify that the timing marks with 1 and 2 dots are in straight line on the cylinder head surface as shown in the illustration.

If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 ) and align the mark as above.

2. INSTALL DISTRIBUTOR

(a) Install a new O–ring to the distributor. HINT: Always use a new 0–ring when installing the distributor.

(b) Align the protrusion of the distributor housing with the groove on the driven gear.

(c) Apply a light coat of engine oil on the 0– ring.

(d) Install the distributor with 2 bolts.

Torque: 19 N–m (195 kgf–cm, 14 ft–Ibf)

3. INSTALL DISTRIBUTOR CAP

4. RECONNECT HIGH–TENSION CORDS TO DISTRIBUTOR CAP

5. CONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR

6. CHECK IGNITION TIMING

Ok so you are saying the notches need to be aligned when the disributor is installed ? or aligned and once installed the notches will be off ? the manual says line them up but says nothing about once installed , and it runs the same both ways .
on every car i have delt with you have to move the dizzy back or forward a notch so they line up when installed:waytogo: the key is ti have it lined up when installed

Thanks guys , Ill put it on the scope and post the fix once I figure it out .
