DCab Problems

Hey all, my dad has an '02 DCab 4wd and he's having two probs.

1) Alignment sucks- it really wanders at low speed, higher speeds don't make it any worse, but its most noticeable at low speeds.
2) Transmission clunks slightly when coming to a stop sometimes. Mainly when stopping fast, but its kinda random.

The stealership is looking at it soon, but I'm sure they'll say all is fine. Has anyone else had either of these probs? I know some of you have been having alignment probs, but was what I mentioned happening to you too?

Thanks for the help.

you sure that clunking is from the tranny? automatic 4x4/prerunners have a bad problem called axle wrap where the axle bind up at fast take offs, ect... i dunno, bump for help

Hmm be a little more specific about the tranny problem... I get this problem where a stop pretty quick, and if I slightly let out the brake, the truck will lunge forward a bit and make a clunk noise... I also have a problem with the ebrake light... it always comes on when the truck is cold. It used to only come on once in awhile but lately it stays on constantly even though the ebrake is not on. And lastly my steering wheel is not centered... The truck came like this and I had the dealership fix it, but its still a little crooked. So hopefully I will have some time to go in and fix these problems

My '02 DC has the same problem with the squirrely steering... but I have always attributed it to the fact that I am lifted with 32" tires on 10" wide wheels

not to mention the sh*tty roads here and there. I didn't notice any problems before with stock tires, tho.

Your tranny clunk is most likely axle wrap. I haven't experienced it, but I have heard lots about it. It probably just sounds like it is in the tranny because it is the only part that can be heard when the drive shaft shifts. That would be a legit problem to point out to the dealer.

Yeah, steering doesn't feel right at all. I have had the allignment done twice on my dcab and still doesn't feel right. The truck definately likes to wander. As far as the clunking, I can feel it more than it actually making a clunking noise. Doen't happen that often though.

Everyone attributes the clunk to axle wrap, but I really really doubt it. Do you know how hard it is to get axle wrap? The springs aren't soft enough to cause axlewrap by stopping at a stop light. I've practically jumped off cliffs in my beast and I have NEVER gotten axlewrap (I have rear lift blocks too, always a common contributor to axlewrap). Besides, it is ONLY common to the automatic trannied Tacomas. My guess is that it is just a shitty characteristic of the transmission, because it seems most 4WD/PreRunner autos get it.

Oh, another thing, axlewrap is very easy to diagnose if that is what it is (I'm 98% convinced that it's not). When you feel the clunk, get out and check your leaves. If they are S-shaped, bingo, axlewrap.

Just thought of something, anybody here have an automatic 4WD or PreRunner that has had the clunk problem and later switched to lift springs? I'm thinking if axlewrap is indeed the problem, a more arched spring would probably eliminate it. Just a thought...

Thanks all. I really can't provide more on what the truck is doing, since I don't drive it. However, I'll let him know what everyone says. I think the dealer said it was due to the 2 piece driveshaft, but him and I have never had a truck without a 2 piece driveshaft and we've never had this happen. I agree with you NAD, I think it is just the nature of the tranny. Oh yeah, he drives it really easy (wimp) so it is not axle wrap. Thanks again.

Make sure they have all the parts when the take our dash apart. I know that my clips are on national back order, and I don't expect my truck back anytime soon.
