Check Engine...

So, I was driving to work this morning, and my check engine light has come on. I just purchased my 2003 Tacoma this past Friday. I haven't noticed any problems with the vehicle aside from a rough idle. Since I've never owned a Tacoma before, I figured I'd come and see where I should start looking to find out why my check engine light is on.

(1) Welcome to CT! ... :waytogo:

(2) You need to determine exactly what code(s) caused the CEL to come on. This requires an OBDII scanner. If you don't have a scanner, some shops will read codes for customers.
So, just to like an Autozone or some place like that? I can handle that, thank you for the start.
Autozone used to offer free code readings, but they seem to have stopped - at least in certain locales.

But yes - check with a local auto parts retailer and see if they'll read customer codes.

Just be sure to get the actual code numbers / designations ...
did you buy it from a dealer?
I got it from a used car lot, so I'll see if they can help me out in the next day or so. Like I said, there doesn't seem to be any change in performance beyond a rougher idle.

sounds like they cleared the code so it would sell. then it came back on after some driving. if you have an advance auto parts around you they offer free code reading :waytogo:
then it looks like you got yourself a lemon, take it back and make those bastards fix it!!!!! man i hate car dealers
Turns out that it's the catalytic converter, although I was also told that it could be because of the fuel used by a prior owner. So, it could have been a lot worse. Now, just a matter of getting it taken care of.

I would take it back to the dealer where you got it and say they sold it to you with defective emissions equipment and you want it repaired.

Get a good 3 stage Cat or you will need a new one in 3 years.
Just out of curiosity, did you get the code read? What was the code they gave you? Don't take their word that it's a cat
