battery post corrosion

I installed my system a couple weeks back and the battery and posts were clean. The other day I had to charge the battery on my truck because it sat for about a week and a half and I only was making short 5-10 minute drives the week before. When I went to hook up the charger I noticed that white corrosion on both posts, the bottoms of the new battery post clamps and the 2 areas where the battery hold down comes in contact with the battery. Any ideas what caused this? Bad battery? That it was drained? Clue to another problem? Thanks for the help.

you are talking about a 'system'...a stereo system?

it's pretty normal with vented batteries. i suspect you are also cycling your battery fairly heavily with the addition of your system, but then again, i don't know what sort of wattage/amperage draw that your system has. clue to another problem? maybe.

clean the corrosion with a big cup of hot/warm water and baking soda. and just remember that you are dealing with ACID and that it IS corrosive, so using a brush or whatever is not as safe as using the hot water/baking soda. honestly, not telling you what to do or anything, but i hate vented batteries for the same very reason. after i switched to my Optima, i have NEVER had to clean corrosion off of battery terminals, or anything else that usually suffers. just my $.02USD.
A while back someone invented this thing called battery terminal cleaner.
After cleaning your battery, AND wire terminals, you should coat the battery terminals to prevent further corrosion.

not only that, but anywhere the cleaning solution touches. it will rust your engine bay, frame, and any other metal it come into contact with!
Thanks for the helpful info guys! :waytogo:

My concern wasn't if i should clean it, my concern was if it was normal for a decent amount of corrosion to to be present in such a short period of time.
You can use a carbonated beverage and toothbrush to clean the corrosion off the terminals.

Use battery protectors between the battery and terminal:
