Air/Fuel Gauge Install

This is for a 2003 SR, 5vz. I'm having trouble with the sensor wire. Instructions say to install it before the connector to the oxygen sensor, but it also says you'll have to know which wire if you have a system where there is more than one wire. So I discover that there are four wires to the oxygen sensor.....anyone know which wire is the sensor wire (the wire I'm supposed to tap into)? Or, does anyone know where the would be in the engine bay. I followed the wires up through the tranny and I believe running to the drivers side near the header.....so I thought I could tap into it there somewhere. Also, instructions say not to ground under the dash nor the frame, but to ground somewhere on the engine. Is there a reason for this for can I ground to the frame? Thanks for any info.

Here's the 2003 S-Runner engine control wiring diagram (attached).

I can't tell from your description which wire / connection you need to tap into ...

The violet wire from the sensor to terminal AF1+ on the ECM is the line that feeds the sensor signal to the ECM. That would be my guess as to the one a gauge would need to be tied into ...

Thanks Enola, I'll check it out. It was getting dark so I really couldn't see the colors of the wires. I report back my results.
are you sure you can get an accurate reading tapping the stock o2 signal? dont we have narrow bands on our trucks and to get a solid reading you should be using a signal from a wideband o2, otherwise its just a light show.. ???

What gauge do you have? I'm curious to see how this works out. Not sure about the grounding issue... Perhaps the guage is more accurate with the ground at the engine. Strange, in theory it shouldn't really matter.

01-04 stock A/F O2 sensor is wideband. Not sure about earlier Tacos.

Try this new A/F X-Gauge code on your Scanguage II. It works for me.

GAUGE AFR (bank 1, sensor 1)
TXD 686AF10124
RXF 04410524
RXD 2808
MTH 05B900800000

Voodootrip tested the SG reading vs. his PLX - said the SG has a slow refresh update (even with the update rate prog'd for "fast") and is probably not suitable for tuning.

well in that case, nevermind.

i tried the code on my 2000.5 and it doesnt work.. sucks, my truck is superduper frankenstiened. i have individual coilpacks, a 4x4 front end, stepside, my 2rz runs smooth like the 01-04s (doesnt rattle like the older ones), i have 01+ rear view mirrors.. theres probable more than that but then that code doesnt work.. jeeze. ill try again. sorry for the rant steve.
Well I haven't gotten it to work quite yet. I have lights, but that's about it, it's stuck on the "rich" light and doesn't ever move, so I don't think I tapped into the correct wire. Boost guage is working though......:waytogo: It's all good Rex. Rant on.

unless you get a wideband and sensor its not going to work...ever.

Came from the factory frank'd out?
so did mine, 01+ motor and mirrors, 00 front end.

Haha, mixing the old with the new. Toyota's not the first. Some early split rear window VW's ('52-'53) were made with a newer, non-split rear window dash and other "Zwitter" specific parts.

Sorry, didn't mean to jack.

Hmmmm.....can you elaborate on this a bit more please? When I bought this gauge from a member on here. He assured me it would work and said it would be easy.....apparently not.....or I'm just a complete retard, which could be the case.
your truck has an a/f sensor not an o2 sensor. narrowband guages require an o2 sensor to work, 0-5v i think. the person you bought it from probably had an older truck that used the narrowband o2 sensor.

that's because you got an 01+ truck with with a 98-00 4wd front clip. be grateful, your truck is super rare, at least it is to me, cuz i never see them anywhere. definately my second favorite year tacoma, behind the 97 of course ;)

it is definitely super rare, i have to order parts using my vin because the make/model/year isnt good enough.

back on topic, i wonder if anybody with an 01+ has gotten the a/f gauge to work with factory sensors... i know that if it is wired correctly itll basically jump back and forth rather than what your getting where its just stuck.

O.k. got it. He had the same year truck, I believe, as mine. Maybe he wasn't sure about his information. So are there any guages out there that would work for my application and how would I go about hooking it up?

ditch the a/f gauge and get a wideband
ditch the a/f gauge and get a wideband
x2... unless you just want a gauge in your truck for looks
ditch the a/f gauge and get a wideband
yeah, there is far better technology with far more accuracy..

that a/f gauge is nothing more than a volt meter, it will not work with your factory o2 sensor..
If you absolutely just have your heart set on running what you have, you'll need a single wire o2 sensor that's used purely for just the a/f gauge.
This requires getting an o2 sensor bung welded onto the exhaust just before the first cat.

I tuned off of the old style a/f meters for years and pushed some serious boost out of my engine..
Thought I had some pics of my wideband mounted.. Guess not. I will try to get some of my PLX. :waytogo:
