a possible solution

hey guys.

well me and a few buddies were talking (we all own yotas)and we all have a common situation. our trucks have a slight lean to the left.(taco lean) well i was thinking about getting an air bag kit of some sort, where i would be able to put more air to the driver side, and less on pass. side to level it out. can someone point me in the right direction, what kit should i get, how do you go about filling with air, will i need an on board compressor? im not to familiar with the air bag setups, so any tiny bit of info is greatly appreciated.

and i am trying to do this on a budget.

thanks again guys.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and more straightforward to try and counteract the Taco Lean by manipulating the existing springs?

That's a lot of work and a lot of money. The simplest way is to use this little item I make that'll even out the rear. Or some guys who buy my blocks have me make one taller than the other. This item pictured simply bolts to the leaf pack and can be made any height.

You have a few inexpensive options...for the rear, 1 longer shackle, or this item below. For the front, I'd simply make a new mount on the arm for the bottom of the coil over. (6 lug TRD right?)

Brian, I dont think its worth the work to make new mounts and adding 1 longer shackle can cause over-extension of the shocks and brake lines, as well as add too much flex for the bumpstops, which will push the leafs into negative arch upon stuffing the tire on the trail.

He already has a lift on the truck according to his sig, so he is probably already at his limits with the amount of travel the shocks can handle.

What type of lift is your 3 inch kit? If it is spacers, then try and find some used stock springs with less mileage. (Try and get the non-TRD springs because they aren't progressive and will not sag as much from the pre-load of the spacer).

If it is OME, they make trim packers for this exact sag issue. And if you have OME springs on your stock shocks without a top-plate spacer, then Toytec makes a 1/4 inch spacer to correct the taco lean and retains the stock studs on the top plate.

:)
yes it is a coil spacer lift, and i just put 285 m/t's on it. so from what i am gathering (i believe) is that the cause of this lean is from the saggy front coils, and not from the sagging, close to negative arch leaf packs?

is that correct?

beefed, those "shim" looking things, those tuck right under the leafs, and will be tucked in by the U-bolts?

thanks, guys.

Post a pic of your front and rear suspension. But it sounds to me like your front coils are shot. Just get some newer stockers (they go for cheap) and that should bring back a bit of lift and help with the leaning issue.

What type of lift for the rear? If it is a shackle lift, take the shackle off and put in an add-a-leaf. however, if your leafs are negative arched badly, its worth replacing the entire pack insted.

:waytogo:
I put a sack of cement in my bed to level it out.

That's funny man.
I guess you could always get a "large" girlfriend to ride around with you.

this is about the best picture i have of the of the lift. keep in mind it has a trailer on it, causing it to squat a tad in the back. in the rear, i have new shocks(pro comp) and an AAL. thank you twisted taco for the help.

i will try to get pics of my front and rear suspension.

BTW. that picture is before the 285's.

thank you.

Sounds to me like its the coils more than anything else. The rear should be settled fairly evenly. Like I mentioned, those progressive TRD coils are probably shot. Mine were toast in 70K miles. Most guys usually try to find non-TRD coils when using spacer lifts. they wont be hard to locate at all. :)
ok. so i will look for a set of used non-trd coils. i will try to locate which coill came from which side. i would like to put the used passenger side coil on the driver side, and vis versa.

im not going to do this, but a curious question, do you think i would gain anything by switching my existing coils now, (putting passenger side coil on driver side, and putting driver side coil on passenger side.) do you think that would be a decent temporary fix? obviuosly im not going to do that, because if i already went through the proccess of removing them, im gonna make it wort it. all this here is just a educated guess, but from information i have gathered, seems that my driver side coil after its 7 years of use on it with all the wait on driver side, from me(235lbs) always have a full gas tank(200lbs) all steering components and battery would maybe level out by flopping coils side to side.

i was just thinking...
the possible solution with fixing the "lean" on a tacoma(or any truck) by swapping out the saggy coils with lesser used OEM coils all makes sense, but i just got to talking with my buddy and he got to telling me that, in september of last year, one of his leaf springs in the pack cracked(driver side, 3rd up from the bottom i believehe said), and replaced it with one single uiversal spring and "restacked" it and set the entire pack back in its place and bolted it all in. DONE. but even before this incident, and after, when the truck is in the air on a lift the driver side tire hangs lower than the passenger side. so this would lead me to think that it was from the rear leafs, rather than the front coils. i however noticed the same thing on monday when my truck was on the lift getting the new M/T's put on.

let me know what you think.
thanks,
mike
