I'm just curious as to what others out there with the 4cly get for MPG. I get about 22mpg. Is that normal? I only ask because our '77 toyota pickup gets about 20mpg and it's 18 years older than my '95. I figured that in 18 years toyota might have made their 4cyl more than 2 mpg more efficient.

BTW: My parent's '77 has over 320k on it without any major repairs! That's why I got a yota.

man!! you guys are luckey!! my 2.7 USED to get 25+ mpg, then I added larger tires(not really--31") and I get about 18-19, or an average of 350 miles per tank....lots of people over on ttora report of 4cyl gas mileage in the middle teens. the tundra V8 gets that!

for me, I seriously think its driving habit, I used to live up in washington where the gas did not have MTBE in it, and I lazily poked along like everyone else...down here in hell A Im always flooring it everywhere just to avoid getting cut off...that and I seriously beleive the quality of fuel is lower down here.

seems like a a .3 liter engine size difference wouldnt affect fuel efficiency so much...but I guess it does?

I'm getting between 22-24mpg with my 2.4L Extended cab. Aftermarket items just include K&N FIPK intake system and Gibson SS exhaust. Road conditions are about 50% rural highway(55mph speedlimit...) and %50 in town stoplight-to-stoplight. Weekends I cruise down the interstate - 75 to 80mph...

The Gibson SS catback sound on my '98 tacoma sounds better at idle than stock...something you notice right away. Has a better sound to it. Once under way and in second gear I like to do the following - step on the gas and floor it to 50mph. Once its around 35 mph the sound starts to roar and at 45 it's LOUD! But that's as loud as it gets and I don't normally drive around flooring it in second all the way to 50mph. Another nice sound is slightly giving a little more gas pedal input when around 50-55mph in 5th gear. It's quite loud for just cuising around in 5th, but more of a nice, low rumble kinda loud.

Intake is nice too...but you only really hear it in 1st and 2nd (until about 45mph) - exhaust takes over after that. But for those few short times you get to hear the intake doing it's job.
