4.0 swap

I'm thinking about swapping a 4.0 in a 87 toy that I have. what are my options around the drive by wire :eek:

A different focus. Realistically, it seems that you want to put a diamond in a copper setting. There are reasons that there are better powerplants, but if you really want to do it, then buy the whole truck, or front clip. Not a cost effective solution to the power problem. Just stating an opinion (right or wrong).
Put the 3.4 instead...
The 1GR is a great motor to about 300-350rwhp. Good luck beyond that. It's a great smooth motor and great tq. But you need all the computers to make it work properly. There are better motor solutions out there that'd be easier. 3.4L 5VZ would be my guess but not as much tq. But no fly by wire either.
I have a couple of 3.4 swaps under my belt, my 87 4runner and a 91 4runner (my daily driver) getting ready to do one for a friend in his 95 truck. I just picked up a 87 4x2 with no motor and have been thinking about the 4.0. I can get one for next to nothing:D just looking for a way around the drive by wire:shrug:

As of right now, there's no standard way around the throttle by wire. From my understanding, it's extremely complicated... not impossible though. It just depends on how much money you wanna dump into it.
drop a 1UZ in it
260hp/270 tq..stock.
and there are a million of them crashed/sitting in pick in pull.


want more? those engines love boost...


and the 98+ models actually have like 290hp, 300lb tq..


or if you wanna be a big baller and put a huge engine in there.
find a crashed ls460..and drop the 1UR in it
(same motor that comes in Tundras..I think)..
like 380hp, 370lbs tq.

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE lol I am swapping a 4.0L in my race truck....NO fly by wire...its easy...Run a Standalone managment system and swap a Throttle Cable driven T.B. and you are set!!!
