I am looking to do the big 3 upgrade and need a little help. I know which wires need to be changed I just dont know where they are located and what color the wires are or if they have a colored stipe on them. I think I see them but I am not for certain and would rather ask and make sure. I am also going to be getting a high output alternator, so if anybody has any suggestions on which type to get and how many amps. I am going to pushing around 1100W just on the stereo system and will probably adding lights and stuff. Aslo what gauge wire for the big 3 upgrade. Also has anybody tried adding a second battery, if so which type and where. Thanks...Mike

Here (attached) is the 2001 charging circuit wiring diagram. The 'positive' lines should be solid white. The ground lines off the battery should be either solid black or maybe black with a white stripe.

It's difficult to trace the line between the generator and the battery because it's part of a bundle that's all sheathed together.

It's not absolutely necessary to remove and replace the stock wiring. You can get the benefits of a big 3 by adding additional wiring in parallel to the stock wiring.

As far as wire gauge - the bigger the better is the usual advice. Most writeups call for either 0 or 1 gauge wire, but many concede you can do well with anything down to about 4 gauge.

There are many basic writeups on the big 3 to be found around the 'Net. For example:

You big three is not going to give you "a massive upgrade. However the other two your going for are the smart options. HO alternator is a def when upgrading stereo equipment as well as a dual battery setup. Kinetic batteries are pretty nice. 4 gauge should get you by just fine. Locate the three ground wires on your battery connection and replace with new setup. One should be going to the block another to the chassis and the last to the fuse block.
I have an '05, and am going to do the big3, but I don't see the engine block to chasis wire. Please help. Thanks.

Well i have done some research and found out that you can use any bolt off the engine and use that one. It could be one off a bracket or something, just dont use one that hold back fluid. If you are not replacing the wires and just adding wires then you wont have to worry about finding where it is located. Thanks
id use 0ga, not 4ga.i used 4ga but will be switching it all over to 0ga whenever i get some money.

might as well do it right and do it once

Wow.... 0ga..... And what's you purpose behind this? What amperes is your truck running to necessitate that much wire?
i recommend 0 gauge also. i generally use welding cable unless the customers want it to look pretty. you dont have to replace the stock grounds, you can add additional grounds to make it easier.
