2000 Taco 2.7 4x4 Manual noob questions about 4x4

Hey Guys,
Not really my realm.
I use to have a 2003 Yamaha Grizzly 660 4 wheeler.

I had a button to push which put the vehicle in 3wd.
both rear and one limited slip front wheel pulled.

I had another button I could press can lock all 4 wheels to pull simulatenously.

I dont have any idea really what my brother has in the above truck.
I speculate that when he manually locks the hubs its one driving in the read and one driving in the front.

The questions are.
1. How does stock 4x4 function and describe what pulls when?
2. What can be done to make both front wheels pull?
3. What is the most reliable/cost effective purchase to make the venhicle more capable for off road use specifically for an Alabama ******* hunter such as my brother. The logging roads are a little rough sometimes.
This truck is his daily driver. He just added new set of Remington LT235 Mudd Brutes yesterday.

Seems to me (although I truly am ignorant to 4x4) there is something that can be done to improve off road performance enough to make the truck more capable off road without investing thousands of dollars.

I appreciate the help fellas.

BTW this truck has 268k and the original belts were changed yesterday.
Its still running the original spark plugs.

IMO i think toyota 4x4s are the best trucks for offroading from the factory. they have alot of ground clearance, are light weight, and reliable. the springs look like they sag alot in the rear so i would say all you need to do is some 2" shackles for the rear and if your that worried about traction lock the rear. if you lock the front it will stress the CV shafts and theres a chance of snapping them
Lock the rear and leave the front open and be done with it. It will go anywhere he needs it to.

X2. i just said it more complicated

1. when its in 4x4, the front end acts exactly the same as the rear end. It has an open diff which means the tire with less stress is the one that spins.
2. you can lock the front diff but it is not reccomended because like 00lifted said, it puts a lot of stress on the CV shafts and it will make it a bear to drive on the road in 4x4. I did notice it has manual hubs so I guess you could put a locker up front and only lock one hub if he needs 4x4 on the street, but if you do that the "differential" action is gone and it wont be very much help.
3. put a locker in the rear. that is the best thing you can do to help that truck perform off road as long as clearance isnt an issue. My 97 was locked in the rear and open up front and it went anywhere I asked it to and got me out of places I didnt ask it to go.
locker, winch, and hi lift.

you can go anywhere for under a grand.
Thanks Guys....Thats a real big help.

I will direct him to the site to read for himself.

If you lock the rear wheels, does it mean that both back wheels drive and then you have 3 wheel drive right?

10-4 on the dont mess with the front end.

I asked him about the truck sagging in the rear and he says it doesnt.
Just looks that way in the pic.

Clearance is all about the bottom of the diff off the ground.

What can be done without changing tires to raise that clearance?

Again, Thanks guys....
