Exclamation Rear Diff Gear Oil Leak

Over the past 6 months I have noticed small droplets of oil on my drive way directly under my hog head on my 2007 Toyota X-Runner. I park in the same spot every night, and have noticed the creation of small puddles of gear oil that have developed over time. I looked up under my truck to try and see where exactly the leak was coming from, and from what I can see I think the leak is coming from where the axle meets the rear differential. I have tried to research any similar issues on youtube as well as the internet as a whole. If anyone has had the same issue or know what exactly is the problem I would appreciate some advise on how to fix it or what to do next.

Re: Rear Diff Gear Oil Leak

I'm a little confused about the leak location. The axle shafts meet the differential unit inside a one-piece axle housing. There's no joint in the housing where the axles and diff meet.

Are you meaning that the leak is in the area of the drain plug? (I believe the drain plug is offset to the passenger side.)

Or do you mean the leak is on the front / forward side of the axle assembly, where the differential assembly bolts onto it?

Or ... ???

My mistake I meant the leak is originating from where the drive shaft meets the rear diff not the axle.

Re: Rear Diff Gear Oil Leak

My guess is you need to replace the differential oil seal (at the front end of the differential unit; where the driveshaft connects).

This will require removing the driveshaft to get at the seal and the additional parts you're supposed to remove as well. Here's a list of the other parts you'll need to remove. Two of them must be replaced during re-installation.

(Before you can remove the seal):

- Rear drive pinion nut (MUST BE REPLACED)
- Read drive pinion companion flange

(Once the seal is out):

- Rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing
- Oil storage ring (MUST BE REPLACED)
- Rear differential drive pinion bearing spacer

The removal and re-installation procedures call for multiple SST's (Special Service Tools), so it will require more than just the usual wrenches, etc.
