Torque Specs for '96 2.4L Valve Cover Bolts

I spent this afternoon uninstalling the valve cover on my '96 Tacoma 2.4L. After getting to the point where I was ready to re-install the valve cover I checked my Haynes Guide which says "Install valve cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to this Chapter's Torque Specifications in three or four steps.". I went to the Torque Specifications chart in the chapter. It lists 33 separate Torque Specs for different bolts but doesn't list a damn thing for the Torque Specs of the valve cover bolts.
If anyone has a manual that lists the Torque Specs for this engine I would deeply appreciate it if you could post them here.

Thanks,

Blake

Re: Torque Specs for '96 2.4L Valve Cover Bolts

Odd ... I can't find any specifications for the 2RZ valve cover bolt torque in the FSM ...

Toyota calls it the 'Cylinder Head Cover'. There's no entry for it in the torque specifications in any FSM I can access. Whenever the FSM describes (re-)installing the cover, it just says to re-install it, without giving any torque info. Torque info is usually given on the exploded components diagrams, but I can't find a 2RZ cylinder head components diagram that shows any torque info for the cover bolts.

This 2004 thread:

... recommends firm but not tight - circa 4 or 5 foot-pounds.

Re: Torque Specs for '96 2.4L Valve Cover Bolts

I finally called my local Toyota Dealership and they told me that 15 lbs is the correct torque for valve cover bolts on this model truck/engine. 15 lbs IS NOT THE CORRECT TORQUE AMOUNT!!!! I had two bolt heads shear off and had to drill out the bolts.
The gasket kit comes with new metal cup covered rubber grommets for each bolt. When you are tightening the bolts, as soon as you observe the metal grommet tops begin to flex the slightest bit you have the bolts tight enough. If it feels to you like the bolt is tight enough before that then stop! It probably is tight enough and if not you'll see a little oil leak after a test drive and can tighten it a little more.
That is a hell of a lot more fun than spending and hour and a half drilling out broken bolt ends.

Yours, Blake

P.S. Believe it or not, you can buy replacement bolts at Home Depot for 79 cents a piece. Just be sure to take in a old bolt for comparison.

Re: Torque Specs for '96 2.4L Valve Cover Bolts

I received 4 or 5 different answers to my post. I had to call the Dealer to see if they had the spark plug tube gaskets since one hung on the tub and tore when I pulled off the valve cover. I decided to ask them since I already had them on the phone.
Lesson learned.

After digging around the correct amount of torque is 52 inch pounds.
