Question Number of Combination Meter Bulbs & Covers?

I have a 96 2WD Tacoma 2.4L DLX, Auto with a column shifter, no tachometer.

One or two of my combination meter illumination bulbs have burned out so I'm going to replace them all. I'd like to know how many bulbs there are total (not just for illumination, but all in the cluster) and how many have those green vinyl caps. Does anyone have this info? Thanks in advance.

Here (attached) are:

- the '96 non-tach cluster connections layout diagram
- the '96 non-tach cluster wiring diagram

The connections layout illustrates how many bulbs may be used overall for general cluster illumination and for specific warning / indicator purposes.

It shows a total of 4 bulbs dedicated to general cluster illumination. The wiring diagram reflects only 1 bulb on the illumination circuit.

Thank you. I appreciate the diagram. There are some options I know I don't have (ABS, Cruise, 4WD, Washer Fluid) and others I'm not sure about (A/T Oil Temp, A/T P) but at least I can prepare for the worst case scenario.

Those are just the indicator lights for specific functions. If your Taco doesn't have that function, there may be no bulb installed.

As far as I can tell from the connections layout diagram, there are only 4 bulbs that light up the cluster in general.

Re: Number of Combination Meter Bulbs & Covers?

Right, but the truck and most of the bulbs are over 20 years old and I'd prefer to just replace everything. For example, I also had an issue with the "D" indicator. I think the bulb burned out then came back to life (likely the filament reconnected again). The illumination bulbs get more use than most of the others, the only exception being probably the "D" indicator, but I'm going to play it safe and replace everything. If I don't, with my luck I'll put it all back together and have another bulb burn out by the end of the week.

The best bulbs I've used, Sylvania 194LL, are ridiculously expensive at the auto parts store ($6 for two) but if you can find a 10 pack, they only cost around $.80 ea. I briefly considered LEDs but I haven't found a decent cost to quality ratio to justify them. The cheap ones are unreliable flickering junk and the good ones are cost prohibitive.
