98 Xtra cab Tacoma Subs

Since I can't post links to the google album here goes.
She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid 😉.
A little mismatched and cracked paint doesn't faze the ole Taco. The paint scheme sort of looks like the Millennium Falcon a little but it won't make the Kessel Run any time soon.
The mission was to add a little sub goodness to the stock sound system. I wanted to keep my cassette head unit and put the subs close to the floor so it wouldn't draw any unwanted attention.
Stock before I did any work. Ain't she a beaut!

Taking the carpet, seats, and trim out. Wow there is a huge bump in the floor taking all that space up under the back seat/cubby hole ledge..

Adding Sound deadening. I used Noico. The before and after videos aren't perfect but it does show that the Noico help tremendously. Keep in mind that the floor and the back walls will become my enclosure.

My original plan was to remove the back cubby hole shelf and build a box using the floor and back walls as sides for the enclosure and re carpet it to blend in.

The required airspace for my 2 8" subs was a total of 1.3 cubic feet. The peanuts are equal to 1.3. As you can see the cardboard mock up is way too big.

I put the cubby shelf back in and measured the air space with the peanuts. It came to just over 1.3 so i decided to go with that design. I bought a router and started making the cut outs. I stepped down the 3/4" MDF so it would sit into the cubby holes.

Routers are so awesome!!!

Just a flesh wound, back to work.

Great stuff expanding foam was used in all the gaps and it did get most of the space sealed (1 can.) I then made a mistake. I figured Flex Seal would seal the remaining few air pockets and also contribute to the sound dampening since its rubber based.. Well, the Flex Seal ate away some of the foam. I used silicone to fix those gaps once it was dry.

Sealed and fastened my baffle plates in with more silicone then I painted the rest with spray paint. Next I sealed up the speakers with foam window seal and buttoned it up.

As for the sound..... The stock speaker in the door are loud and are pretty decent. Adding the subs really bring them to life. My calculations were tuning the box to 33Hz. What I didn't think of was the port being so close to the floor. It's about .5 to .75 inches away from the floor. Since the port diameter is 1.5", it should be (at least) that far from the opposing wall so there is some fluffle at very high volume. It does sound 100X better than without the subs. They're punchy and really open up the depth of the music. The amp (Boss RIOT 1100) is a great amount of power for these @ 8 Ohm load -about 100 watts to each speaker. The subs have a strong peak around 45 Hz which is ok by me but would like it to go a little lower. I may change the ports later but it sounds about like I had hoped for. Totally worth the work and was a fun little project with a little room to improve..
