DIY: How to recover your 01-04 door panel inserts

Ok, i'm not aware of any writeup on recovering door pannel inserts in my gen taco, so here it goes...

Step 1: Gather tools and materials (no pics of this...)
Your going to need at least the following..

01-04 taco with electric windows
Philips head screwdriver
Two hands
Xacto knife of flat razor blade
A spatula or credit card to soothe the material out
a dull dull butterknife or you can use the spatula for this as well
somethign to pry the little plastic plugs out of the door
spray glue
and your choice of fabric
(beer optional )

Now here's how to take the door pannel off

Step one...
this is what it looks like before you start

Step two
Start by removing the window switch panel.
Do this by working your fingers in there between the door panel and the switch panel in the front, it will pop up , and then you slide it forward..

Step three
Depress the little tabs on the connections, and unplug them from he switches.
(dont worry about remembering which is which , they cant be mixed up)

DIY: How to recover your 01-04 door panel inserts

Step four
There's a single screw holding the door handle on, remove it with a philips screw driver
(remember lefty loosy)

Step five
the door handle will not just fall out, you have to gently pull on the front of it towards the door jam , it will release and will hang there

Step five.1/2
pull the door handle away fromt he panel a bit to make sure it wont get hung up in it

Re: DIY: How to recover yout 01-04 door pannel inserts

Step six

take your prying tool and carefully pry at the bottom of the plastic plug, and pop it out.. Dont mind my scratches, i dont care about them... remember to pry out the other one beside it as well

Step seven

there's a screw behind both plastic plugs, its quite long , about 1.5 inches and its semi hard to find with the screwdriver as well, so dont get dissuaded...

Re: DIY: How to recover yout 01-04 door pannel inserts

Step eight

here's where it gets fun..

starting at the bottom by the speaker, pop off the door panel from the door, its held in by plastic pop in plugs... dont be scared, i've never broken a plastic plug ( dont send me hate mail if you do)

Step nine

Continue on the bottom edge of the door to the other side continuing to pop off the plugs. there's also some on the vertical sides of the door, so check for them as you go...

eventually you end up with all them disconnected, and you can start to push straight up with a twisting motion with the rear rising higher them the front..
when you get all the way up the top of the door will be out of the windown chanel, but dont run off with the door just yet

Step Ten

once the door is out of the channel, you'll have to twist it around the door handle and it'll come through the panel

Step Eleven

unplug the tweeter connector and your home free

Re: DIY: How to recover yout 01-04 door pannel inserts

Step twelve

Start by disassembling the door panel. were going to be removing the arm rest
there's seven screws hold it to the panel..(once more dont send me hate mail if the count is inaccurate...) the screws are circles in green

Step fourteen

this is what the door panel looks liek striped and ready to get down to buisness.. i'd say take the time to clean out under the arm rest, i guarentee its filthy, and also the whole panel as a whole in prep for taping.. make sure its exteremely dry and oil free before you start the next step..

Step fifteen

Start laying the tape down.. the purpose of this is to prevent glue from going where you dont want it, and you onlywant it ont he cloth.. dont worry about overlap on the cloth, we'll cover this next

Step sixteen

Next its time to whip out the razor blade or exacto knife as i prefer, make sure its a fresh blade and very sharp...

what your going to do is stick the blade down in the chanel that the cloth is shoved down into and run the knife around the whole thing making sure your tape is covering the plastic door panel,.. it can be tricky but take your time, and if you screw up , throw some more tape on top of the bad are and try again, its ok to do patch jobs

Re: DIY: How to recover yout 01-04 door pannel inserts

Step seventeen

Time for the glue, whip out your spray glue and spray it on the cloth, spray it on pretty good making special sure to get it int he grove where the cloth sits in..

i'd recommend doing this outside for obvious reasons

Step eighteen

allow the glue to tack for a minute or so, and its not time to lay the cloth on..

lay it on from one end to the other, taking special care not to have any wrinkles or humps or air bubbles, stuff of this nature.. if you've ever laid vinyl stickers, you know how to do this..

use the spatula or credit card to help smothe out the wrinkles

Step nineteen

no pics, however take your dull butter knife or spatula and start vigorously shoving the material in the cracks, get it in there good and as far as you can

step twenty.

once again get a frech blade, and start running the blade in the crack aroudn the panel liek you did with the take, cutting off the excess material as you go.. if the blade gets hung up and pulls thematerial back out shove it back in imediatly

, you shoudl end up with something like this

Step twenty-one

no picture once more, but cut an x in the material covering the door handle opening, being careful not to cut too far and expose the material underneath

Step Twenty-two

reinstall the door panel on the truck, and have a beer and celebrate(if your of legal age of course)
yes this is my drivers door panel, no pics of the passenger installed

BONUS PIC(me enjoying beer and working on cars)

hope this was helpful, if not make your own damn how to

The two tone door looks nice. You might want to leave your party hat and "prying tool" at home when you take her for a spin Thanks for the pictures..... they speak so much louder than words.
