turn signal switch bad?

hello all,

my 98 taco has a turn signal issue, when I turn the turn sigal on for a right hand turn it clicks fast and repeately until I pull down slightly on the turn signal lever and then it starts blinking correctly. It's as if it goes to far up. When I push the lever down to make a left turn it works fine.

It's not the bulbs or the relay since they do work fine when I pull down on the lever, it's just annoying and I think it's getting worse.

I am thinking of the turn signal switch itself in the steering column from my research, has anyone else had this issue?

has the vehicle ever been used for towing? check for the presence of a trailer light wiring harness.... i've seen those cause lots of turn signal issues due to improper setup, grounding, etc.

that is a great reply but it is not wired for towing, I thought of that too, stripped wires or a short back there. It looks like it did from the factory, well with alot more dirt.

check to see if your brake lights do anything funny when you mess with the T/S switch. it sounds like that is what the prob is, but if your brake lights faulter also, that's another nail in the coffin. good luck!

I'd replace the bulbs on that side first. I've had them blink fast but at first glance it looked like all the bulbs were working fine but after replacing a rear bulb I saw that one was faulty.

Sounds like a bad switch since you can move the switch and get it working.

Hey 98TacomaSR5,

Are you still having problems with yoru turn signals?
I am experiencing the same problem with my 98 Taco.
I am afraid that it is the switch assembly. I'll let you
know what it turns out to be.

not had an issue but i have an extra switch, the one with the headlight part, i got it when i bought my intermitent wipers.

I had a problem just like that in a 98 Ranger. I took the blinker arm off and cleaned it with contact cleaner and never had a problem again, but i did trade it in for my taco about a year later
