S-Runner Model / Inventory Number
The Toyota internal model / inventory number designation for the S-Runner is 7153. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Toyota VIN's are 17 digits long. They consist of 16 data entries plus a 'check digit' used internally (by Toyota and law enforcement agencies) to verify the validity of a VIN. To identify a 2001 - 2004 Tacoma as an S-Runner, you really only need to refer to the first 5 characters in the VIN string. 1. World Source: 5 = USA: TMMI & TMMCA 2. Manufacturer: T = Toyota* 3. Vehicle Type: E = Truck 4. Body Type/Drive Type: V = Ext Cab 1/2 Ton 2WD 5. Engine Family: N = 5VZ-FE The 'Steven-Stick' Rule for Identifying S-Runners: All SR's have the first five VIN characters: 5TEVN You can remember this by associating it with the name 'Steven'. Because the S-Runner was the only 2001 - 2004 2WD (non-PreRunner) Tacoma with a V-6, you can quickly ID an SR by confirming the first part of the VIN is 'Steven' (5TEVN). If it's raised or you otherwise have reason to wonder if the specimen might be a PreRunner, you can confirm it's an SR if it has a manual transmission. No pre-'05 PreRunner had a manual transmission. Introduction
The Tacoma S-Runner was introduced in the 2001 model year - the same year the Tacoma Double Cab first appeared. This was also the model year in which the last pre-'05 Tacoma generation ('01 - '04) was introduced. With the introduction of the completely new 2005+ generation Tacomas in autumn 2004, the marketing / model slot inaugurated with the S-Runner was occupied by the new X-Runner. Though a completely new and different truck, the X-Runner carried forward the motif of a sport-oriented 2WD V6 manual configuration.
