Default Check your 2rz valve clearance.

I just finished installing the head on my 2000 2wd Tacoma 2rz after it burnt an exhaust valve on cylinder number two. Truck has 180,000 miles and I neglected to adjust the valve clearance.

If you do have problems don't be afraid to do it yourself. It was fun and not too hard with the service manuals that are available online. I took the head to a shop and had it rebuilt and replaced the timing chain at the same time. The most difficult part was the front pulley bolt which came of easily with a good impact gun and a strap wrench.

The truck started right up and runs very smooth now. Ready for another 100K miles. I love my truck.

Glad you got it fixed, and got the satisfaction of doing a lot of it yourself ...

I'm at 150k. Does Toyota recommend a mileage you do this at? How much would this cost if i didn't do it myself?

I am not sure. The valve adjustment is fairly straightforward but requires a special tool and the shims. I would call you local mechanic I am sure they can give you a pretty good estimate over the phone. You definitely need to have it done.

You might want to check your compression levels. That will tell you if you already have any problems with the valves.

How do you know if your valves need adjusting? You can hear them if theyre too bad correct?

You need to pull your valve cover and measure the lash (shim bucket to cam lobe clearance) to know if they are with in spec, better not wait till they get tight otherwise you WILL burn a valve
