Default Is there a core charge for catalytic converters?

A shop wants $240 for a magnaflow cat + labor + my old cat (illegal as of 1/1/09). The owner says they have to keep the cat for that price, the reason being there's a core charge. Is he messing around?

i have NEVER heard of a core charge on a cat.. sounds like he's going to take it and cash it in for the platinum in it
btw that price sounds way overpriced IMHO

Actually, some manufacturers are now requiring sellers to collect a core charge. Some OEM dealers are now required to collect the core or charge for it. Our shop have seen a $500 core charge from Nissan.

You can recycle cats and certain recycle centers and get about $70 for them...FYI. I've turned in half a dozen or so in my lifetime.
