I mostly run on a bypass during the week at about 70mph on a 4cyl. so would you say a cold air intake isn't for me?

Hot Air Intake........ that will net you about 1mpg or more depending on everything else..

How air intake = a more complete fuel burn.

The ignition doesn't have to work as hard to ignite the fuel..

and when you want a little get up and go with some cool sound,
unplug the hose and route it to the front of the truck..

Deckplate mod.... CAI not worth the money imo... According to my scangauge, ambient temps are about a +-1 degree of actual outside air temps with my DPM.

why spend all that $$ on those expensive CAI tube thingys...?

but yes, if a CAI can direct colder air up into the intake pickup, you'll get slight mpg improvement. if your CAI scoops air and can pressurize the airbox slightly, then you'll get even better mpg, but dont expect a miracle, late model engines have a fairly high VE to start with, and getting more VE under NA is not so easy......

you might see better mpg gains by max'ing out your tire pressures ("max" meaning as high as you can go without abnormal tread wear, etc). my XRS gained 1.2mpg going from 30psi up to 39psi on the tires (30.8 to 32 mpg hwy).

The stock intake is a cold air intake, although not the most efficient. Aftermarket CAI's will not change much as far as mpg.. your driving habits will help the most. I agree with many who've already replied.. you can get pretty much the same air intake improvement with a very low-cost deckplate mod as you would with an overpriced kit.

More power available to the engine, if properly applied, can give better mpg..

After doing the elbow mod, installing DT short headers, and now replacing stock muffler with magnaflow, I am seeing an increase (although slight) in mpg.. same driving habits, I'm finding that I don't have to downshift as much to recover from an 1100rpm 4th or 5th gear crawl, unless I want to scoot a bit. I don't lead-foot & my average commute rpm is 1300-1400 & I usually upshift between 1800 & 2000 rpm's.

Old blind dude the killer in th factory units is they have a silencer which kills some air flow. But at cruising it doesn't do much. The power gains are at WOT not limping down the road. On my 2tr I had I removed the factory air hat left filter same location and plumbed in with flexible tubing and gained around 2mpg over all. And I wasn't downshiftng as much. It seemed the air went into the engine easier and cruised quieter. But I 2nd the DPM. Freebie

i'm not so sure the silencer is a noise silencer..... it may be to damp out ringing (flow ringing) in the intake charge, just as i use a snubber circuit to kill the electrical ringing when a FET with capacitance osciallates with an inductive load... snubbing out a airflow ring in a tube can yield better airflow than without the snubber (if thats what the box is for, etc).

anyone have a confirmation from anyone that shows better airflow without that "silencer" wart? or may have some pressure readings in the tube while motor goes through its paces?
