I smell tranny fluid....

...after driving about 25 miles from home to school. I live right next to the freeway so I just hop on the freeway and when i get off the freeway, i smell the gear oil of mobil one i put in my manual tranny last year. im sure its coming from my tranny and im driving pass shopping centers so there's no way it couldve gone from there.

any help?

Well, first off, are you leaking anything? Are you positive it wasnt something else? Is the smell still lingering? More info is needed

smell only lingers after i get off the freeway. and then, it lasts about 4 mins and it goes away. no leak, tranny looks clean. but because gear oil has that distinct smell, i figured it had to be the tranny fluid.

i got a 2wd, so the rears differential looks fine, no leaks. i recently replaced the shifter sockets. but thats about it.

The Power steering uses ATF, which also has that distinct gear oil smell. If you have even a small leak, it might not be all that noticeable visibly, but will still have that distinct smell.

so your suggestion is look for PS fluid leak around the PS pump?

yeah.
Either around the pump/reservoir or near the steering rack... I have a 99 too, and mine has leaked at both places...
Actually, the gasket on the reservoir cap is probably worn by now. I even have a small leak around the cap too. It's not enough to cause it to drip or anything, but it's just enough that you can smell it from time to time (especially if I'm out wheelin').

Well ****ty news for me too, i started smelling gear oil also and just thought it was someone else. But it kept coming around every so often in the past couple days. Well i jacked the truck up to look underneath and right around where the shifter is was all wet looking and also the bottom of the cab above it. The drive shaft also looked wet.

What could be leaking?
