Well with Gadget's permission, it's time to let some info out about the Turbo S Runner prototype.
Sean (S/X Runner) is the lucky bastard that owns the truck the turbo kit was installed on. Since Sean only lives a few blocks from me, he was kind enough to come by the house for me to take a good look at it. He only got it back a couple of days ago.
Impressions:
Gentlemen this turbo kit is the REAL DEAL! It has to be the nicest exhaust/turbo manifolds I have ever seen. The intake piping/intercooler set up is routed well with minimum cutting involved and looks good at the same time. The picture Gadget posted in the "teaser" thread in the S Runner forum is indeed Sean's truck. The picture doesn't really do it justice. The cruise control box had to be relocated and Sean has to come up with a different windshield washer tank and location.
The fuel setup is unique. As shown in the picture there are 6 additional 240cc RC injectors provided in a special injector plate sandwiched between the two halves of the intake plenum. A special additional injector controller (AIC) is used to control the extra injectors. Basically the system uses the stock ECU for all engine functions including most of the closed loop. The MAF signal is not altered. A URD AFR calibrator is installed to aid in the transition from closed to open loop. The AIC starts adding fuel approaching and during open loop. Those 6 injectors
should be able to handle all the boost and HP this turbo wants to produce.
The system looks good and appears to be well engineered. I think I drooled on Sean's fender when I was looking at the manifold!
Sean cranked it up for me and it ran pretty much like a stocker except for the tone of the exhaust. URD installed a 3" exhaust from the downpipe and a very large Dynomax muffler exiting in the stock location. Sounded nice and beefy without being loud.
I was asked if I wanted a ride---as if he had to ask!!! All I can say is WOW! The turbo spooled at about 2000/2200 rpm however I felt no lag. The way the setup is now, it produces 6.5 psi of boost. Honestly as hard as this thing pulls, I'm not sure you need to boost any higher. At 6.5 psi boost this truck will pull my 12 psi S/C truck with no problem at all. I didn't get the "full tour" but Sean made a few runs in 2nd and 3rd to redline. Very impressive to say the least!! I was pushed back in my seat hard. The turbo and blowoff valve make this thing sound awesome.
I don't have any particulars on the turbo or the trims. You guys will have to ask Gadget. There are no dyno numbers or track times on this truck yet. There are a few more personal "tweaks" Sean is going to do first like install a manual boost controller. He plans on setting it up so he can run around 12 psi as well as the stock 6.5 psi. He said he will dyno at both settings and post the sheets. The track is closed for the season so that will have to wait as well. I can tell you this, he did a 2nd gear roll on for me and even with the sticky X Runner tires he has, the tires simply went up in smoke. I don't know how he is going to get all this power to the ground while running on the street. (I really wish I had that problem!!) Guys, there is no way you can run this turbo setup with out a really good clutch, a good LSD or locker, and the widest, stickiest tires you can find. This is not a setup for the "meek and mild". You better know what you are doing if you want to make use of all the potential of this kit.
All in all, if you guys care about my opinion, I was very impressed with the quality and most definitely impressed with the performance. It is a very "mild mannered" street set up you could daily drive with no problems at all. When you get on it and hit full boost all hell breaks loose and this thing simply hauls ass!! I don't know how else to describe it. My work truck is a Cummins turbo and I know well what turbo lag is. Lag on this setup was not a factor. If it lagged I couldn't tell. Then again my ass was taking bites out of his seat cushion when he was stepping on it and I was so amazed at the amount of "push back" I was feeling, maybe I just didn't notice!
Gentlemen, I am no expert on turbo systems but I am impressed with this one. If the production kit is anywhere close to this setup there are going to be some very happy 3.4 drivers when it comes out. After Sean gave me the ride, I had to slap him upside the head to get that dumbass grin off his face and get him to talk!!
Sean, again, you are one lucky bastard!!
