School me on which 3rz to swap (1988 4runner) + Turbo

It looks like I'll be swapping in a 3rz to my 1988 Turbo 4runner (see: 22returbo.net). I've had enough polishing done on the old 22RE/22RTE tractor engine and it's time for something a little more modern... That works with my existing driveline.

As near as I can tell there a 2 things to consider when buying the 3rz:
1) Distributor vs distributor-less (coil pack)
2) 4-port intake or 8-port intake

Can someone steer me in the right direction in terms of years/models where I'd find these differences? I don't mind paying for a nice low mileage one, but I want to get it right the first time.

We'll EFI it via megasquirt (once I figure out the timing setup). It'll have a low boost turbo, probably my existing .48/.60 T3 - 7 psi or less...

Advice appreciated.

The 8port flows more, there is a picture somewhere on the site that shows it.
I would go with coilpacks but thats totally up to you.

Thanks. It looks like the 4 / 8 port thing applies to the lower plenum. Most of the JDM motors that I'm seeing are early 94-96, 4-port and distributor...

What years had the 8-port manifold?

1995.5 to 2000 i believe.

It's not just a manifold thing, the heads themselves are different from what I understand.

U want 98 to 00.5. For coil pack 8 port.
96-97 are 8 port with a dist.
00.5 are 4 port with coil on plug.

Mine is a 97 with coil packs
