Its been a while since I did it, but I had a 98 with a noisy rear end and pulled it to have the gears inspected. It was a pain to removed the whole thing, and would've been easier if I had the locker (I think) engaged. After I got it out and had the diff checked, the gears turned out to be wearing fine, just noisy. It was kinda weird, but I drove it like that and never had a problem.... Grey wire mod ftw by the way!

Lift one tire off the ground as to alleviate any tension within the gears? There is only one bolt and the rest are nuts on studs. They all secure the locker to the housing. Be sure you got all of the fasteners from the top of the locker off. i just popped mine with a dead blow and it slid out just fine.

If you look at the below picture the actuator is on it's side. The the bottom most hole on the left which is slightly recessed is just to bolt the wiring and shield onto. The one just above it on the left and the two round holes on the right are all fasteners.
