Could it be that your fuel pump is somehow coming on and running? That's about the only thing I can think of that might sound like a running compressor and is located in the rear ...

the evap system is the system which deals with the hydrocarbon evaporations off of gasoline, the hydrocarbons are considered bad for the environment, and so it pulls the vapors off the tank and into the charcoal canister until it can pull them into the engine to burn them without any drivability changes, the sound you hear is basically it checking for leaks in the tank or gas cap. if you leave youre gas cap off or even loose, the evap system throws a c/e light

AC maybe. I know, weird answer. But serious. 06 trucks even came with a tag mounted on stick shift with a warning/message saying AC makes noise and sound is normal, etc. Happens when you are not in truck, like you say, etc.

EDIT: Just saw a post a couple ^^ up. Maybe it said evac, not AC, etc, Anyways, noise is normal.

The odd part is that the noise happens when the truck is not in on or running.
