KAuss 01-19-2005, 11:09 PM i came the a few conclusions...
1st gear is hella short
The truck has hella torque
Shifter can be a pain once in a while even tho it's smooth while granny shifted
Heel toe is possible but need a huge brake pedal... Brake is too small and my foot slips off sometimes
60 = 2k 6th gear (pretty sweet freway cruising)
I can hit 6th gear on the street?!?!?!
Reverse takes a bit of work to get into and you cannot accidentally get into it... If you do, stop wanking with your right arm...
The truck is stiff as a board... Every bump sends the truck semi air born http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif A bit different but damn every pot hole makes it a pain to be in the middle of a shift...
The truck is hard as hell to park in a metropolitan
Truck can stick to the road on a sweeping turn like it's on rails
Reving out of first on a 90 degree right hander can result to a bit of wobble action / hop? Not a huge problem since it almost feels like a pot hole http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Missed 2nd too man times on a 4 > 2 and should be shorter for sure!!! Grinded once, and mised it twice...
Look for more tomorrow as my eyes are dying from 3 hours of sleep... My left leg is dying from all the clutch work too!!! I was in first probably 50 times on the freeway today!!! How obsurd!!!
cam2Xrunner 01-19-2005, 11:29 PM Have you got it sideways a yet?
http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/draggin.gif
KAuss 01-19-2005, 11:33 PM I didn't even take it over 3K dude... This is my baby... All the heel toeing can be done within 1K... A regular downshfit is usually 500 rpm away...
This tranny is CLOSE AS A MOFO!!!
My heel toes are all 2 gear shifts, and usually 1K over... The clutch makes it hard to judge if I actually matched it right... It's very forgiving unlike my Integra that LETS you know if you screwed up...
I still got a good lot of miles before I can get the thing to rev 5500... I'm going to get an oil change after break in before I start taking WOT lessons...
BTW, if your seat is rattling, does it sound like a hollow piece of plastic being hit? Did you guys try buckling the seat belt when moving?
colby 01-20-2005, 09:34 AM kauss i thought u got an rx8 why are u talkin about a truck now
slamdtaco 01-20-2005, 09:41 AM http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif read the rest of that post
KAuss 01-20-2005, 11:30 AM HAHAAH, damn sweet it still gets SOME people http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
BEST joke EVER!!!
Any other XR owners have something to contribute to this? I want to compare findings!!! http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

I agree. I am patiently waitint a short throw shifter, intake and a cat back system. Come on aftermarket....
Blangkang 01-20-2005, 07:38 PM yes yes don't we all, I said fawk the catback and just got a muff. Same fawking thing, Hey you going to show that baby off this weekend Xman
KAuss 01-20-2005, 09:37 PM Ok I put 75 miles on it today in 3 hours cursing the city... I mdae sure everyone in SF got a good look (although they weren't looking haha)...
Anywho I got a few more things I need to put in here...
1st gear seems to grind when reentering from a low speed... It isn't as bad as other cars that totally avoid you from going back in, but grind is never a good thing...
The gas pedal even when you fully lift off of it still has a slight increase... For regular driving, it helps my upshifts as it makes it compeletly smooth... The whole drive seems like it's in 3rd gear... However, for those that have WOT the truck already, how do you avoid it from htting past redline on a 5,500 shift? I think mine jumps about 300 rpms or so... I think Johnathan mentioned this already a long long time ago...
Heel toe is NOT a problem any more with the small brake pedal... I've just found out how to properly place my feet and have total control of the brake after downshfiting... I'm trying to figure out a way to light up the wheel well and place a small enough camera to capture it... For those that want to learn...
I now also have the rattle on the passenger side... Almost sounds like a loose power window... I was having so much fun driving I didn't care...
The truck has nice shocks, but takes bumps ALL too horribly... Seriously, for those that are planning to lower the truck even more... Don't bring it to SF... I literally had a street buck me like a rodeo competition... It wasn't as bad on the freeway / smooth surfaced streets, but I took her through the ghetto and damn this thing is killer...
Cabin noise is low, everything except the passenger side rattle makes a noise, I almost felt Lexus like sitting in the driver's seat...
I missed 3rd gear like 4 times today shfiting lazy... It seems I have to pay more attention... The slightest amount of force on the right side of the shifter can set it off track... It requires a very clean push directly from the bottom... However 5th and 6th are very easily interchangeable...
Taking her to the twisties tomorrow so maybe more after that trip...
cfrost 01-21-2005, 10:00 AM lol I'm at 3,000 miles and I've gotten sideways plenty of times http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
KAuss 01-21-2005, 08:14 PM MF!!! The truck was pretty cool the whole few days I got it, but FINALLY something super ghey goes wrong...
The stupid rear shocks probably the bushing is giving me a horrible sqeak... I don't know if it is the bushing but I guess my truck has to go back to the dealer!!!
My friend hopped on the back and did a bit of bouncy action and directly there after the squeaks of death appeared...
Word to the mutha, don't let the homies hop in the bed...
POS squeak is ghey bomb!!!
KAuss 01-22-2005, 03:40 AM I don't know if anyone has a *rear* suspension problem yet... I just found out from my sister that the squeaking appeared before my trip to Mt. Hamilton... It was inaudible 2 nights before, but thats when it started apparently... I don't know if the long 77 mile city cruise took a toll on the truck... However, the day of the Mt. Hamilton trip, the truck just went over the top with suspension noise originating from the rear driver side wheel well...
I drove the truck around the city some more the same night and my concern now is the stiff ride the XR has... Paired up with the city's road conditions, I don't see how my XR will hold up ever... It feels like a car on the train tracks rolling over every cross beam... The stiff ride is harsh on the person and especially harsh on the truck IMO... I'm definately going to have a dealer look at it, but hopefully someone can say something comforting about the whole situation because of all things I think I would want to hate, the brakes would be first... Definately not wanting it to be the suspensions...
Enola Gaia 01-22-2005, 06:40 AM In and of itself, the stiffness is probably by design ... My '04 SR is notably stiff because that's the way they designed it. I'm guessing this is the first stock vehicle you've had that was deliberately 'tuned for tautness'... ??? And then there's the basic fact it's a truck... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
AFP520 01-22-2005, 06:43 AM my S in stock form never made any noises.. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
Enola Gaia 01-22-2005, 06:46 AM Are you sure it's coming from behind and not below? The most common noise problem reported has involved the cab mounts. Be sure to have your dealer check the torque on those. Also, I was reading just the other day about squeaks and noise having to do with caps or something on the OEM shocks (or maybe the shock mounts). I can't find that thread just now...
I also noted you posted over at TundraSolutions. Did you happen to review...
this thread on suspension noises (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3319)
...and do any of the reports therein seem to match your own problem?
Enola Gaia 01-22-2005, 06:49 AM my S in stock form never made any noises.. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
Neither did mine... I was only referring to the 'stiffness' part of KAuss' issues. Come to think of it, my SR has had the _least_ ambient noise (other than the engine, of course... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evil.gif) of any truck I've ever owned...
BoostError 01-22-2005, 06:51 AM My 96 squeaked, so I got louder exhaust. It went away.
cam2Xrunner 01-22-2005, 10:11 AM Kauss my truck squeeks in the rear suspension as well. You can hear it by simply getting out of the truck. When you get out and the truck goes back up it makes a slight squeek. I think the problem might be the rear swaybar bushings arent greased enough or could be the leaf springs.
If it's the swaybar bushing it's kind of weird for it to happen so early, but the way to rememdy this is to install energy suspension regreaseable sway bar bushings.
Enola Gaia 01-22-2005, 10:29 AM Somewhere (BlundraSolutions?...) I read a post about an '05 squeaking / noise problem that the dealership attributed to swaybar bushings. Another cause that's been cited is something to do with the shock "caps" (???...) making a similar noise under load / bump conditions. I can't seem to find the thread about the shock 'cap' problem, though - I was looking for that one earlier in response to one of KAuss' postings...
MountainBiker 01-22-2005, 11:27 AM Mine squeaks occasionally, noticeable when driving, or when getting out of the truck. It squeaked even without any rear anti-sway bar. When the dealership does the oil change, they squirt some grease in the leafs, and that kills the noise for a couple thousand miles.
KAuss 01-22-2005, 02:09 PM My squeaks are not SMALL squeaks... They are mofo loud and they come by EVERY time I start up in first... Every bump in the road will send my back squeaking...
It used to be only loud enough to be heard with windows open and very quiet around... Now it's heard even if my windows are closed with radio on at about 10 volume...
I too think it's the leaf springs... However I don't know exactly how... I'm sure it isn't the cab mount because the sound originates from the rear driver side wheel well, I think some from the passenger side too but it is really loud near the bed...
Still waiting for reply from my local dealer for a fixup... Until I get my schedule for a fix, we won't know the outcome...
I'm so no putting up with a noisy ass truck so new...
BTW, I've been in dropped cars more times than I can count, but this truck probably is the best handling out of them all... YES you heard me, the BEST... However, the ride quality is probably a bigger concern than any of those dropped cars other than large pot holes... It shakes / bucks violently on the oscillating bumps on the road... A dropped car would usually just hug the bump and thats it... The truck will lift and dip with it, thats what I'm saying..
Runner 01-23-2005, 10:43 PM KAuss, you are damn right about the handling.. I've driven my share of cars w/ high perf suspension and this truck feels real good.
I just got mine yesterday (a red one) and only problem is that I have to ease on the turns since my little 5 year old can't handle her "roller coaster" ride for too long! =D
KAuss 01-30-2005, 12:44 PM Ok, first off, while pulling out of my driveway, I usually have to get near turn lock (I try not to) all while being on the clutch to creep out... After I release clutch, it seems that time and time again there is a very audible PING (almost sound like preloading a thin piece of metal and releasing it)
What is that sound?
Secondly, whats up with the idling of the Taco? I drive this thing, gear up and as I let off the gas, the revs still climb... I shift into nuetral just to see was it my problem and it does the same thing... Also when I'm in nuetral, the revs seem to either stay above or even climb sometimes without any throttle input... Not only after 2 seconds of sitting at a red light does it completely return to its idle point...
My idle is also around 700 RPM... A lot higher than any car I've driven... Why is that?
Jonathan 01-30-2005, 12:49 PM mine and my bros do the same things, the revs climb when you let off the gas, no big deal. 700 is a very normal idle, infact, even 1k isnt out of the norm. the sound you are decribing isnt familiar to me, maybe its the pressure plate or something but you can hear it bc your going to slow?
onestocktaco 01-30-2005, 01:00 PM my truck idles pretty high too... annoying. gotta mash the brake to make it stay still...
at the car wash i worked at man, i noticed suburbans and other newer GM cars idling between 450 and 500 rpms.... wish mine did
Enola Gaia 01-30-2005, 01:00 PM Is there a return spring on the clutch pedal assembly? The metallic 'ping' you describe sounds a lot like a spring rebound noise. I've had similar little noises from pedal springs in the past...
KAuss 01-30-2005, 01:25 PM So I guess thats a normal spring sound right? Nothing that'll be a concern? It only happens near turn lock and whlie I'm creeping with the clutch...
As for idle, for automatics it's normal to be above 500... Anything I've ever owned thats manual has been 500 and under... Not a huge threat, just annoying how high it revs just sitting there... However it makes starting from first a breeze since you don't have to even rev it to get it rolling...
Edit: I can't see a spring near the pedals, so I can't really say...
Firdaddy 01-30-2005, 01:27 PM the revs climbing between shifts is built in to the truck, toyota does it ti make shifts smother.. butit seems it would be a pita when your hauling and hit rev limiter

Enola Gaia 01-30-2005, 01:29 PM So I guess thats a normal spring sound right? Nothing that'll be a concern? ...
Don't get me wrong - I don't know for sure... All I'm saying is that I've seen springs (especially new ones) sometimes give a sort of metallic 'ping' or 'pong' sound at the extremes of their extension / compression. Sort of like a thin piece of metal might make when getting bent (or having pressure removed from a bend)... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

FWIW - the FSM-spec idle speed for the 3.4L V6 in an SR was 700 rpm (+/- 50).
KAuss 01-30-2005, 01:33 PM Max power is at 5,500 RPM... If I let up at 5,500 it'll freely rev past the red...
I don't want to have to shfit at 5,300 just to avoid hitting red... I had no problems with this in other cars because the max power usually have another 500 rpms before hitting the red...
I can shift fast and good most of the time, so I'm not worried about me... I'm just worried about the Toyota override...

So is this a normal thing for trucks? Is it the long stroke? hmm... I don't see the advantage of having a higher idle... Seems to be over kill... If onestocktaco confirmed that GMC and Chevy trucks have low idles then it puzzles me why Toyota isn't the same... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

it should not rev freely past the red if you have not tried.......as soon as you hit 5501 rpms the fuel cut out shows its ugly face, nice little saftey feature i guess.

There's no "normal thing for trucks".... Idle speed could be spec'd low or high by a given manufacturer, and for a variety of reasons... It's a spec / feature of the engine, not the overall vehicle... FWIW - I've noticed over the years that both Toyotas and Hondas seem to be designed to idle and run at higher rev-levels than a lot of similar vehicles. I've become accustomed to their relatively higher spinning...

Welcome to the world of drive by wire. After the computer senses you releasing the gas pedal it takes a moment for it to close the thottle plate. Its mostly felt under heavy acceleration.

I think this is why the manual 6 spd gets worst mileage than the auto 5 spd... Definately sux... What are the advantages and disadvantages to drive by wire?
cam2Xrunner 01-31-2005, 12:08 AM Ka Man I believe the metal ping noise is the cab mount bolt noise that is talked about alot. I have the same ping pong sound when I am creeping/turning sharp and giving it it a little gas. I can now make it do it on demand. LOL
Just waiting on the tsb.
All of the Toyota's I've owned(4 so far) have had idle rpm's at around 700-800 rpm.
And all of my family members((7 not including mine) have the same idle.
Enola Gaia 01-31-2005, 06:07 AM Ka Man I believe the metal ping noise is the cab mount bolt noise that is talked about alot. I have the same ping pong sound when I am creeping/turning sharp and giving it it a little gas. ...
Now there's a thought... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
Reports on the cab mounting bolt issue usually cite it occurring during cornering. I wouldn't have thought it related to KAuss' problem (stated as being associated with letting out the clutch) unless he's persistently peeling out...
KAuss 01-31-2005, 08:49 AM Nah, I barely even gas when I creep... This thing is more than happy to roll at under 1K rpm...
Thats weird how some mounts can ping like that sound... I don't get the noise while I'm driving around tho... When I'm cornering, unless it's a bumpy road my truck is usually the quietest then... Only when I'm corner creeping on the clutch will it be all weird...
Firdaddy 01-31-2005, 09:46 AM mabey the driveshaft is loose? http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
KAuss 01-31-2005, 01:11 PM mabey the driveshaft is loose? http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Don't scare me now LOL... I'm definately sure it isn't the driveshaft of else it'll make a lot more noise and a lot less wheel spin...
I'm pretty confident that it isn't serious until something definately gets louder or definately stops working... Seeing as I still got 2 years and 11 months and a whole mess of days... Another 35,400 miles or so left on my warrenty... I'm not too worried yet...
Still drive by wire sucks...
KAuss 02-03-2005, 01:10 AM Man I find excuses to drive around for NO apparent reason and absolutely no destination in mind and I'm still at 600 miles... I still got another 400 till break in and already I have to get the stupid warrenty on the truck again... Damn squeaks came back and it seems this time it'll hinder my driving it around again...

http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
KAuss 02-03-2005, 01:20 AM We'll see... I would do it if I know for sure it's the bushings... However they greased the leafs and took the squeak away... I washed my truck and it came back... So I'm assuming it's the stupid soap water that nuetralized the grease that brough it back...
How can any one else out there stand the damn squeaks? I mean even when I get out of my truck now it squeaks... I put a finger on the rear bumper it squeaks...
cam2Xrunner 02-03-2005, 01:41 AM I''ve washed my truck probably 40-50 times or so and never had loud squeeks. Right now there is none at all. Gone through a muddy dirt road and haven't gotten any after that either.
KAuss 02-03-2005, 03:17 PM Well I took my baby down to the dealer again today for the squeaky squeaks... The tech was just baffled at what the noise is and how it makes it... I asked him did he check my sway bar bushings last time and he told me that he did and it wasn't comming from that area...
He even disconnected the strut to see if it was that being the problem... No go... Was there for a while before he decided to order me a right side leaf spring... He lubed up my right side again and it hasn't sounded but I'm sure it'll come back...
I can't wait to get the thing fixed once and for all... I also asked if he'll be ordering both sides... Didn't confirm on a yes, but I guess if it ever happens again on the left I can just easily take it in...
I've been pretty happy with Toyota's effort in pleasing even the hardest of customers... ME!!!
Runner 02-03-2005, 07:11 PM great... let us know how it goes... i'd love to get that squeak to go away too.. i had my mechanic back up the car out of the garage and it had to go on some bumps.. and boy WAS IT SQUEEEEEEAKY
KAuss 02-04-2005, 01:08 AM So far both SF XRs got the squeaks... I don't even know if the rest of this board know what bumpy roads are...
They lubed my truck up and it drove find when I left again, but 88 miles of local driving again, and back comes the squeaks...
I don't know how long it'll take them to get the part, but I'm sure asking for both springs if that is what the problem is...
Runner 02-10-2005, 10:30 AM Did ya get the parts leafs yet?? I can't wait for your findings.. it is damn squeaky.. maybe it's the fog...
Gadget@URD 02-10-2005, 10:54 AM When exactly do you hear this noise?
Are you hearing it when you make sharp turns at slow speeds like in parking lot with no bumps in the road?
Or does it seem to be related to bumps in the road?
Gadget
Runner 02-10-2005, 01:16 PM as for myself.. i hear it when the back is in action.. meaning there is some flex in the suspension... like going up a driveway, etc. This is at VERY low speeds... when I stop.. i get out of the car and hear the squeak.. after a few seconds.. i can get on the bed and try to recreate the movement and no sound..
KAuss 02-10-2005, 03:04 PM Runner try driving around for 2 hours at night, probably go near Ocean Beach during your run...
I find that everytime I go there, my truck will end up squeaking like a mofo...
As for my squeaks, let me tell you when they arrive, I can make it squeak just by putting my pinky on the rear bumper... I'm not joking... I can probably drop my shoe in the back of my bed and it'll squeak... Mine squeaks whenever the truck is moving...
My leaf spring (no plural) will be replaced on Tuesday... For the love of me I can't get it to squeak on a short drive that I goto work with... I'm going to test it again sometime before next Tuesday to confirm that the squeaks are still there and I'll see if driving time / conditions attribute to it...
Everytime that I drive it for 2 hours and it peaks out at annoyance... The truck will settle in and just be squeakless for a good 2 miles even if I hop in the back and jump up and down... I'm starting to think it's the oil shocks reacting to the temps... However SF isn't nearly as cold as some other places...
The funny thing is, the dealer mechanic even detached my strut on the passenger side and it still carried on squeaking... This is why he thinks it's the leaf spring...
KAuss 02-13-2005, 02:57 AM I need another host for this video for those that want to know what it sounded like... I drove this thing maybe 25 - 30 miles to bowling and back and when I got home from a foggy night... Surely this squeak can't be missed... However the trip one way was not long enough to make it sound horrible while driving... However by the time I got home, each time I get into 1st and slow to a stop, the squeak will be there...
A week ago this squeak was so bad that I can lay my finger on the rear bumper where I was standing and it would make the noise at the same volume... Today I had to rock it a bit but let me assure you the same noise is there every time I drive it more than 20 mins...
Now this might be normal for trucks and I just don't know, but I have never heard anyone pull up next to me squeaking like this especially with no plates... If you guys still think I complain over nothing then I wish this on you http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evil.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badidea.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nana.gif http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

cam2Xrunner 02-13-2005, 04:05 AM The squeak heard round the world.
http://www.postdiluvian.org/~gilly/Schoolhouse_Rock/pix/shot.jpg
newlou 02-13-2005, 07:50 AM Maybe it's something in a shock internal or shock piston seal? Nothing else back there has much of a temperature change w/use, right?
Runner 02-13-2005, 08:27 AM I find my squeak to be not alot from UP AND DOWN MOTION but i can get it to squeak when I push the car forward and backward (in a rocking motion)... it doesn't totally sound like it's coming from the shocks... it HAS to be the leafs..... REALLY WEIRD.. it is annoying.. i'm thinking that here i am rolling a cool truck and all people "see" is a squeaky truck.. hahaha
KAuss 02-13-2005, 09:40 AM Hey runner you up to host the vid for everyone else to judge?
I don't get the sound from just up and down motion, I get it starting from 1st and rolling to a stop also... This means when the weight is transfered to the front and back...
However the truck will squeak while on cruise mode going over bumps...
I'm thinking it's the oil shocks... There must be some temp issues with them after use... Especially for us in SF where the roads are less like roads but more like back trails at times...
I purposely take my truck through these roads sometimes just to see if I can work some new sounds out... Or to re-judge my ride quality opinion... However nothing ever changes...
Runner let me know if you're down to host my video I'm sure you got the same squeaks as me...
***note*** about 2 or 3 hours after I got back from bowling and recorded the video, the truck cannot be rocked to make the squeak again... So the use of the truck is highly linked to the sound it makes... The longer and rougher the roads are when used the easier / louder the squeaks will become...
Runner 02-13-2005, 03:12 PM yeah... send me that thing..
KAuss 02-13-2005, 06:46 PM You got mail...
BTW, can someone lock this thread after he posts the video? It's too late for me to edit the first post.... Should really link the video on the first post or else this thread is at a loss...

To solve the rear suspension squeaks? What are you replying to exactly?

xxxxxBazzy 02-14-2005, 09:07 PM damnit that's what my truck sounds like.. i was told the rear shocks were making it, or the leaf springs. You've tried lubing them up right? I know it's unrelated to your truck cause i have an 01 TRD prerunner but i mean it's the same exact sound.

Gadget@URD 02-14-2005, 09:37 PM Nice vid.
I don't understand what the big mystery is. That should be so easy to figure out. Two ways, first put it on an alignment rack and have someone jumping up and down in the bed while someone is underneath tracking it down.
The next best way is to use a chassis ear. That is a gadget that has 9 microphone on aligator clips. You clip them around differnet thing that you think might be making the noise. Then through the headphones you click through each microphone one at a time until you find the one making the most noise. Then you relocate several microphones to that area and keep doing that until you figure it out.
Here is my guess. It is either sway bar busings, or spring shackle bushings.
Gadget
Runner 02-14-2005, 09:52 PM That was the next thing i was going to do.. get it up on a lift.. problem is my friend's old school impala is on there and can't be moved as of yet... but I think WE (all of us here) can figure it out better than the guys at the dealer...
cam2Xrunner 02-14-2005, 11:27 PM Yeah mine squeeks too. I'm pretty sure it's the swaybar bushing. I hope thats what it is anyways. Anyone know the swaybar thickness? I'm going to try some regreaseable ones from Energy Suspension.
KAuss 02-15-2005, 02:46 AM The tech guy at my local dealer went and lubed it up... It goes away for a day then comes back after 20 mins of driving... Like today I went to work and back 10 mins each way, I didn't hear a sound... However, I go an drive around for 20 mins like I usually do after work just for kicks and it comes back in full force... It gets so bad that like I said, when I get out of my truck after parking it, it'll squeak, if I lay my finger on the bumper it'll squeak...
The mechanic even used a stethoscope looking like thing to listen for the sounds when I jumped up and down for a good 5 mins... He can't conclude where the sound was comming from and decided to order that ONE right side leaf spring... I'm actually going in 2/15/05 Tuesday to get that thing replaced...
I'm pretty sure this won't be the last of my squeaks... However this also won't be the last they hear of it if it isn't fixed...
So now I hear people get squeaks, but do you guys get it while driving around normally? Like I said, my truck squeak is louder than my exhaust... Everytime I go in 1st, everytime I go over a bump, and every time I roll in nuetral and stop with brakes...
KAuss 02-15-2005, 02:52 AM told ya, thats why im not gettin one
Dude colby http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
There is so much this truck is, it makes the squeaks just a minor problem... You can sit there with a brand new 4 mile old 30k Tundra with the fixings and ask me to trade... I won't trade for it...
The XR is tits man... I might sound like I hate my truck at times, but believe you me I'll even pass up a Evo or STi trade... I don't even want a RX-8 ne more...
I still respect you for not buying it, but you obviously haven't driven one, and obviously haven't even given one a chance... So unless "you" come up with something original, don't knock the XR because others find little things about it...
I'm not ticked off because the truck has issues, that is expected for a first year model... I'm ticked off because it's taking a lot of time and effort to fix something on a truck that is 25K and dosen't even have plates yet... If this was fixed the first time or if they knew the source of the problem (much like the seat rattle) the XR would be 100%...
colby 02-15-2005, 08:13 AM i wish i could get one i really do i even had a dream about it but i just would rather have something more less noisy i cant stand my tacoma now cuz its real bad. but i still wanna hear all the goods on the x so keep me posted
radtcma 02-15-2005, 08:15 AM told ya, thats why im not gettin one

KAuss 02-15-2005, 09:14 AM Tundras are built by Toyota using the same rear architecture... I'd be damned if it won't squeak...
Like I said I don't diss you for wanting a Tundra, those things are nice too...
Well off to the dealer... For the umpteen time...
Jonathan 02-15-2005, 10:50 AM i just want to know wtf mine doesnt squeak? kinda feel left out. and the seatbelt rattle is what i thought it was, got it last night, its the extra cab door shaking in the jam. put you hand on the door when you get the noise......its not the seat belt thing. if you press firmly on the door you can make the noise come and go as you please.

Dude mine never squeaked eather, But I did find the cure for the cab sqeak muhahahahahha it's called a volume knobe.
KAuss 02-15-2005, 11:41 AM Well, it's good to hear, the "no squeak" is what I'm trying to accomplish by wasting so much of my free time going to the dealer... I don't get to sleep till damn near 3AM and I have to bring the truck in early every time...
Pisses me off to hell n back...
8ate8 02-15-2005, 06:00 PM but i just would rather have something more less noisy
Whatever dude. If your only reason for not getting a Tacoma is a little squeak that the bed makes, then you have some serious issues with perfection.
sstyota 02-15-2005, 07:30 PM my mini squeaks, but only when i press on the back. it doesnt do that when im driving...at least i can't here that along with my toolbox rattling
lol
KAuss 02-16-2005, 12:20 AM Well changing the rear leaf spring took the dealer from 11am to 1:30 pm... So it wasn't such a long wait...
I haven't had the chance to test it out yet since it's still raining... I just had a long day at work with no sleep (woke up after 4 hours to get the truck fixed) so I'll follow up tomorrow if the weather is better..
As the guy pulled my truck out the lot, I already heard a faint squeak from the driver side spring tho... Whatever, if the spring is the problem, I already know I got a new one waiting one the squeaks come back...
Firdaddy 02-16-2005, 06:58 PM mine did that CONSTANTLY after i dropped it.... i sprayed some white lithium grease on the shackles and it went away... and this is ohhh.... 6 months ago now..just spray the [censored] outta those suckers... or hell disasemble them and spray it inside....add a zerk fitting..lol.. btu hey as long as its under warranty y not..
KAuss 02-16-2005, 11:49 PM I don't know how the Lemon law works, but if it keeps happening and it keeps being the same issue, I can get a new truck as long as I keep bringing it back...
The ONE time before I get a new truck, I'm going to be ON it for sure LOL...
Probably do a few burn outs and a few drifts before I take it in for a last tuning LOL...
GO GO LEMON LAW!!!
Last I remember it's what something like 3 times in 6 months?
cam2Xrunner 02-16-2005, 11:54 PM I had a feeling you were going to want to try to Lemon Law it because of that squeek. I wasn't sure if you said this or not but did they relube the swaybar bushings?
KAuss 02-17-2005, 12:21 AM They didn't give me the full work over view the 2nd time, but I'm sure they took the oppurtunity to grease it up some just to keep me out of there for another week or so...
I'm already hearing squeaks running up the driveway... Still not feeling lke doing a cruise yet... I'll be bowling Saturday anyways, so I'll probably do it then if not sooner...
The sad thing is, my paint has NO chips in it, the truck has no windshield leak like some posted, and the only thing is the seat rattle... I also spent a LOT of time breaking it in... Going through lemon might mean I'm going to wait again...
It's going to be one of those things I look into however if the squeaks just will NOT go away...
I do have a few scratches clear coat deep, so there is something to gain... Definately going to burn some rubber before I bring it in to contest...
Trust me I'll have videos http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Those guys are gonna eat you alive again haha...
I'd still kick it with you with a Tundra, just as long as you're happy with it... Even if you kept your Taco...
However, don't give these guys chances to ask you "what else" LOL... Trust me you don't want that...
colby 02-17-2005, 09:10 AM not xr bashing, but i told you in the beginning there where problems with the x. and then i hear all this stuff about squeaking and what not. Just letting you know why i am choosing a tundra over the x thanks

00yota4x4 02-18-2005, 09:28 AM I dont seem to have the squeak. I have a Speedway Blue one. although i just got it 3days ago and only 300miles on it. The only thing that pisses me off is that damn seatbelt in the back hitting the door. I am gonna get some small velcro strips and put it on there and attach it to the plastic so it doesnt bounce around and make that noise
Enola Gaia 02-18-2005, 09:45 AM Since KAuss first brought this up, I've been wondering if it could be rubbing between the composite and metal components of the new bed. As I posted elsewhere recently, at least one '05 owner was told there's a definite 'rattle' problem relating to the composite bed. In that case, the owner associated the bed glitch with the widely-reported 'cab mount rattle' issue. I'm still wondering if it's the source of the similar but distinct squeaking issue... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Some guy posted about that tundrasolutions
Runner 02-18-2005, 10:14 AM When i "bounce" on my car in the back, the squeaking is not as apparent as when i roll the truck forward and backward.. The squeak is VERY audible.
I really haven't had to a chance to really pinpoint where the problem is.. but if toyota can't figure it out when i take it back.. i will have to do the investigating myself.
Blangkang 02-18-2005, 10:15 AM Also I don't rememebr if I had a squeak, I must not have one because I can't remember
Enola Gaia 02-18-2005, 11:01 AM (1) Yes, it was a guy over at TundraSolutions who first reported getting a definitive explanation of the (composite bed causing rattling) problem. He reported that Toyota is working on a TSB.
(2) In that case, the owner was surprised to learn it was the bed. He thought it was coming from beneath, not behind. Just goes to show that sounds can trick you...
(3) Another thing learned is that the composite bed problem seems to vary with temperature and maybe humidity. When I read that, I was reminded of KAuss' reports that environmental conditions may have affected the occurrence of the squeaking.
Runner 02-18-2005, 11:04 AM Doesn't matter what dealer you go to.. All dealers have a database that they can reference.. I did also mention your experience w/ your dealer and what they have done.. but as of right now, my truck isn't squeaking so i can't do anything w/ the dealer until it does.
00yota4x4 02-18-2005, 11:07 AM Blang i dont have the squeak either...we both got Blue...hahahahaha maybe just red and black squeak..i know sounds dumb..but no one said they squeak with a blue one

Touch up paint isn't good for anything... Maybe good for a 5 min high for your local crack head... Takes way too much work for less than stellar results... I rather live with some chips and just clear coat that suka!!!
Maybe I'm just lucky, but I can't find any chips even when I look at the flares / quarter panel lower portions...
I know Jon's bro has chips, he's got a black truck too... Didn't see the pics tho... For those that do get chips, they're mostly from the 4x4 crowd, and with some 4x4 off roading, how can anyone not expect chips? http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

00yota4x4 03-01-2005, 07:49 AM it could be the salt in the air causing your trucks to squeak. Since you are right by the ocean. just a guess.

slamdtaco 03-01-2005, 08:50 PM they all started in cali. they just recently moved at least the dub cabs to mexico.
momotaro 03-01-2005, 09:11 PM I just saw an '05 Dub Cab driving in a parking lot. It was squeaking from the front and rear as it rolled over a speed bump. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Yeah, I hope so...this kind of build quality is definitely NOT up to Toyota standards.
KAuss 03-02-2005, 12:38 AM Mine was built around last Dec... It wasn't done until early Jan...
It should have something to do with the springs and the coating they put on it so I've heard... They never really found the cause, but like I've said, if you bring yours down to SF Toyota instead of City Toyota (dude they are the WORST Toyota dealer in the Bay Area) and tell them that you have the same problem as the guy with the black X-Runner, they'll replace your spring...
I didn't even get my truck from SF Toyota, got mine from Fremont, and they're still cool with me... My passenger side spring is squeakless as far as I can tell from the driver seat, however my driver side spring seem to still make noises... The noises are less squeak like, but more clunky... When the weather is dry, I do get smaller doses of squeaks, so hopefully the weather dries up so I can get my other spring replaced...
8ate8 03-02-2005, 03:55 PM To me it seems like you guys are complaining about the sqeak too much. It doesn't seem like it's that bad. We'll see when I get mine http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

8ate8 03-03-2005, 05:07 AM No I did. It's just that you guys make it seem like it's doing it nonstop while driving. Thought it only did it occasionally?
KAuss 03-03-2005, 09:56 AM Well then you didn't read my description...

Runner 03-03-2005, 03:48 PM So far.. a couple days have passed.. rain, shine... no squeak is back YET..
KAuss 03-04-2005, 12:37 AM So far.. a couple days have passed.. rain, shine... no squeak is back YET..
You know what they did is just the lube... Once the lube wears off or you get some crap stuck between there it'll come back....
The first time I went in I was hoping they wouldn't just lube it and call it a day... I know if that happens, they'll most likely have to do it again once the lube wears off...
Hope I'm not jinxing you, but if it does come back, you know where to get a new leaf spring... I'm not trying to push SF Toyota as being a good dealer, as I've heard bad stories about them too... However I know they can get you a new spring http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Kro781 03-04-2005, 04:58 AM mine squeeked at first, but now it doesn't http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif and it only happened when I was getting out of the truck. maybe it has something to do with a weather thing, I'm in fla and have about 400mi. so chalk that up to the ideas
Kev
KAuss 03-04-2005, 10:21 AM try driving with no radio on and open the rear window to hear your truck when you're driving... if you hear it when you're getting out, then it should be pretty bad while you're moving...
Kro781 03-04-2005, 06:36 PM it has disappeared when I get out, I have tried driving with the windows down to listen for it, even when I shove it or jump in the bed it is gone for the moment. or it will squeek once, I guess I'm just lucky
Kev
Runner 03-04-2005, 06:41 PM YEs.. I knew that when they lubed it... but damn.. i think they used a whole big box of crisco this time... it hasn't come back YET.. here's hoping.. but i do alot to try to get it back.. so far no luck.. I have the case open w/ them and they also know that it'll come back... IF and when it does come back, they will make sure they get TOYOTA engineers involved in the issue (so they say)
KAuss 03-05-2005, 02:16 AM Damn I'm starting to sound like a broken record... Officially the squeaks came back tonight after work... I guess this is just one of those things that won't go away... I just gotta wait for a long drive to confirm it on a roll now...
Damn this is annoying...
Runner 03-05-2005, 07:24 PM The SQUEAK is back and in FORCE.. takin it to dealer on monday.
ryuujin 03-05-2005, 08:35 PM Lucky me my truck don't squeak. Its a black one too...
KAuss 04-19-2005, 12:30 AM See the radio in My Xrunner...should look juts like yours, now go ahead and give the volume knob a quick turn to the right....Much better
Dude you don't have a XR radio!!! MUHAHAH
Anyway, Cam, you better watch out because some people will start to think you complain too much whe you think a Toyota truck is something less than perfect http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
My squeaks are still around, but they come and go... I got no paint chips and still have fun driving it... However I'm more than ready to give the NEXT XR the time of day... I mgiht not even mod this one incase I do trade up for a 2nd gen 2nd or 3rd year truck...
I didn't even know there was metal under the bed... Or is it between?
KAuss 05-04-2005, 02:46 PM Well, I finally woke up early enough to go to the dealer to get my driver side spring looked at...
The one they changed squeaks but it isn't audible... However the one they didn't change is screaming... It was fine for a while, but since my truck got washed (I think the soap does weird things) the truck has been screaming constantly...
Anywho, the millionth time I go down there today... I just hope they roll out the red carpet for me next time hahah... Last time them foos left my wipers on half way and let it sit... Made a fatty mark on my windshield that won't come off... Hopefully it don't rain today...
KAuss 05-04-2005, 04:08 PM OMG, so I finally wake up early enough to get my truck down to the dealer and what do I see when I open the garage door?
RAIN...
I drove the truck around to see if I can work up the squeaks again and obviously it won't squeak...
Someone somewhere is playing a trick on me... They're condemning me to own a squeaky truck forever!!!
Bah...
MidKnight X RunneR 05-04-2005, 07:05 PM i feel for you Kauss, mines being a bastard with so many damn squeeks, i'm gonna take it in after the may 14th drags to get the squeaks and tranny done.
KAuss 05-05-2005, 12:27 AM I might be temped to do that teflon sheet thing between the leafs if someone can show me how...
My hands are meant to type and rarely do they work well enough to pick up a wrench...
KAuss 06-15-2005, 10:43 AM You're not the only one... However it's expected for first year models...
I got my 2nd leaf spring replaced yesterday and my truck came back with the same squeak problems within a day... I can hop onto the back of any Tundra or even another X-Runner and not find this problem...
I think I'm gonna drive it for 3 days and see if it comes back even worst, then the next time I bring it back in I'm going to ask for lemon issue...
KAuss 07-03-2005, 01:22 PM Well, for the quanzibillionth time that I was at the dealer (some might even mistake me for an employee) they told me that Toyota's hotline is now preventing work on the rear leaf springs until there is a TSB out...
They told me it's now finally a known issue and is pending a TSB...
So hopefully they finally fix this ish...
Enola Gaia 07-03-2005, 02:55 PM FWIW.... At least Toyota is (finally!....) acknowledging the problem. Also, it proves you weren't insane... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evil.gif
Good luck with it... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
derekv6 07-03-2005, 10:11 PM what is the problem?
Kgrgunman 07-03-2005, 11:37 PM what is the problem?
there is no problem, he's insane.
j/k he was having a problem with his leaf springs squeeking, a few had this problem, but i only think about 20%-30% of the x-runners have complained about it.
Enola Gaia 07-07-2005, 05:53 PM A TTORA member ('Raven') has now (7 July) reported official Toyota chatter about a pending TSB on this issue....
http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12958
Looks like it's not just rumor - the ball really is rolling.... http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
EL PAALO 07-08-2005, 12:29 PM the only time mine has every squeaked is when 10 people were in the bed. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Kauss is still crazy in my book. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
MidKnight X RunneR 07-08-2005, 08:06 PM i have it, kauss has it, and eyevan has the squeak. kyle and a bunch of boys heard it at the last hooters meet. ask them.

I got the squeak too http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif gives me flashbacks of my mazdaspeed protege bushing noises ...

Yeah, at first I thought the guys complaining of this were being babys. "Its a truck", I thought. But it is BAD! I hope this problem can get fixed for those that have it.
KAuss 07-09-2005, 10:33 PM Someone is gonna have to tell me about this when it is active because my address is changed and I won't get the letter...
I think Midnight making us call that # got the attention on a lot of the XR problems... I just hope Toyota isn't going to lag on the issue...
Enola Gaia 07-09-2005, 10:42 PM Someone is gonna have to tell me about this when it is active because my address is changed and I won't get the letter...
Seeing as how you've had cause to keep in contact with Toyota on various issues... Maybe it'd be a good idea to make a point to report your new address to them. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
KAuss 01-08-2006, 04:03 AM Who didn't see this comming?
I'm going to ask them how to file for a lemon... Might not get it but it's worth a shot...
5000XD 01-08-2006, 05:32 AM Someone on TS had this same problem that the TSB didnt work (4 weeks ago?). It went away for 3 weeks or whatever and came back squeeking like hell.
bcutshall 01-08-2006, 05:46 AM i am dumb.... what is TSB???
MikeX 01-08-2006, 06:04 AM Technical Service Bulletin
-Sandman- 01-08-2006, 07:37 AM Just to clarify, is this the clutch squeak we are talking about? Because if it is, they probably just lubed it. You might need the master cylinder changed like RedXRunner.........mine was just lubed and that was....a few months ago and it hasnt come back yet.
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 07:50 AM there is no clutch tsb..theres one for rotten egg smell and rear spring noise and for a water leak in the cowl area..
-Sandman- 01-08-2006, 07:56 AM Yeah there is a TSB for the clutch squeak (this just might be for older Tacos, and pertains to the bushings wearing out, but its the same thing on ours), but for the 05 tacos there is one for the cab mount noise.
Wheres the cowl area ?
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 07:57 AM if you have a squeak in the leaf springs the tsb wont fix it .. the tsb is for a metel to metal slap noise when the leaf springs hit eachother..all it is is 4 tefflon pads that they stick on to the overload leaf (i did it on mine).. if you have a squeak have them check the swaybar bushings if its not that you should complain and have them warranty the leaf springs..if you complain they will do it.if not call toyota and they will call the dealer and tell them to...:waytogo:
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 07:58 AM the tsb for the clutch must be new ..ill check a work monday..

The leaf spring TSB also includes four new plastic pieces that replace the black plastic OE spacer pads. But they dont fit, nor do anything. My kit came with rectangle fitting ones and the hole in our springs are round, check my Leaf spring TSB write up...search in the X forum....
Again, whats the cowl area?
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 08:01 AM the cowl area is where the windshield wipers sit..check your left kick panel area after it rains for water..its a big job tho they have to take the lleft fender off and remove the left apron support and reseal it..hopefully you wont have this problem..no tacomas came in to my dealership yet for this one yet..
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 08:05 AM exactly right i threw those in the garbage i just used the 2 stick on pads in the front and i modified the rear before after drop - Page 7 - Forum (http://customtacos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50144&page=7) to stiffen the spring rate

So you also noticed the plastic spacer pieces werent right? Thought it might have been just my kit, VIN matched up and my truck was infact effected. Weird, we should call Toyota about this...
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 08:35 AM actualy the kit is for a 4x4 they updated the tsb.. now when you go on TIS to check the tsb it says spring noise 4x4...but they still paid my claim..
Enola Gaia 01-08-2006, 08:40 AM the cowl area is where the windshield wipers sit..check your left kick panel area after it rains for water..its a big job tho they have to take the lleft fender off and remove the left apron support and reseal it..hopefully you wont have this problem..no tacomas came in to my dealership yet for this one yet..
NOTE: The 'official' cause of the leakage problem addressed in the 'driver side drip' TSB was a welding defect (burn-through? incomplete bead?) which left a gap through which water could get through from the left front wheel well.
The production flaw responsible for this defect was supposedly fixed in early 2005, so the 'official' version of the problem is limited to early-production 2005 Tacomas.
DRIVEN2MADNESS 01-08-2006, 08:57 AM exactly..the vin range is very early..
KAuss 01-08-2006, 04:26 PM I got the leaf squeaks... My VIN was under the list of affected trucks so I'm guessing my problem was addressed as the issue...
However I'm just saying for those that have the "squeak" also that the TSB might not work as a miracle fix...
I officially took the truck in for the 5th fix now and I "think" I'm entitiled to have a lemon arbitrator look at my truck... Toyota has tried lubing, replacing springs, adding pads, and a few other fixes I forgot... Not to mention the process of them forgetting a X-Runner comming in every few months (I mean how many visit them anyways?) So I have to keep going for inspection the making appointments to get the fix... That means at least two trips!!! I've been to the dealer a bunch of times and probably wasted more miles on them than I do drive the truck for leasure...
Was wondering for those that did have success with lemon issue, what is the process like? Do I talk to the dealer?
