View Full Version : X-RUNNER OWNERS, ATTENTION!!

x-runner owners, stop being stingy with the pictures and info. I need more 1/4 times as well as overall opinions about the truck. I have read everything on the internet about the truck and now im going to forums. You never can get the real dirt from reviews on the internet because they are trying to sell it. I am in KOREA until mid January at which time I will be getting a new vehicle........more than likely the X-RUNNER.
Could it take the older stangs? Is the supercharger option available at dealers only? Ive been to the TRD site and it is not there. Have you heard a price for the option?
Please, for the love of God. I need real opinions and pics.
THANK YOU.

The winner of a 1/4 is not the car, but the driver... The truck isn't a F150 Lightning, but it has it's own merits... They advertise this truck for it's handilng and not more so for its 1/4 abilities...

Is the truck worth buying? For 23,xxx are you kidding me? Can you find another RWD 4.0L V6 with LSD 6 spd for 23K? Even the overly underpowered Miata cost 25K.... You can get a stang for 19 and drive a Ford... I personally can't stand the shifter in the 2004 GT... I missed so many shifts in that thing and it has the wierdest position, even worst than the Civic Si...

With all new cars n trucks, you should really give it a year before you take in all opinion... Usually everyone that buys it now has nothing bad to say about it... I do have a ton of gripes, but those are all minor to the point where I can get used to it... The only serious performance gripe are the brakes... You can stand the horrid braking then this truck will treat you well...

I hope that within a month URD will have a brake upgrade kit for your X-Runner so you can fix that problem.

Variant,
Personally I think the number of interior pics have been on the lacking side! could you hook us with some.
Also for what his name in korea look through section titled s-runner/x-runner there are plenty of pics of a blue x-runners exterior. I think there is also a thread with pics of a truck up on a trailer being delivered showing it's rear frame support.
I would also like to see pics of the engine bay without that damn plastic cover on the motor, get rid of that crap! just my opinion. I can't wait till my chevy is sold and I get one of these.

NICE!!! I've always wanted to see the engine, I think this is the only thing I didn't get to see from the new Tacos...

Also, if you can somehow, show more of the X-Frame... I know it's hard to take a pic of, I got to see it clearly in person but only from what was showing from the rear wheel well... Does putting it on a jack help?

Suspension and the external Blistien shocks would make a good pic too...

Sorry if it's too much work, but might as well if you're going to do it, do it all one time...

This thread has officially be hijacked!!

Ok your awesome dude, what about like a shot of the bed? like how those new mounts are? and though I have seen some great ones of yours what about a perpendicular one of the side? by the way I believe it's one of your pics that I have on my desktop at work and home. Blue x-runner I believe taken at a gas station or something like that. u'mm can't really think of any other good angles but lot of the interior would be awesome.

He also has it posted under the Toyota forum... Those were some great pics!!

There are pics of the bed all over the web tho... They are not of the XR but they're the same thing as long as it isn't a DC... The bed in person just looks like a bed with a liner on top of it... A lot of poeple don't like it, but those are the off road folk...

Wow man lots of great pictures, the only thing I would like to see more is a shot from the back of the cab aimed down at the shifter area that's like the one area that I still can't see in these pics.
also on the engine bay pic that dark bronze looking tube that is the exhaust right? and is that a friken cat right there? cause that's pretty damn close to the motor to be having a cat isn't it?

thanks for all the extra ones cam, I still got the one of the front view of your truck up at work on like 10 different computers! The interior is just some much more inviting to me.

the center console of that auto yeah that looks so cheesy to me! don't know why just don't like it. probably just because of the fact it's auto.

The one pic with the name that isn't like the others yeah that one doesn't load right for me.

lastly whos yellow car is that, we have a silver one of those that some damn low ranking enlisted fool drives around on the base here. I just want to let him hit me just so I can make him pay for my truck and his insurance sky rockets!
Ok, I'm done rambling for now.

Thank you everybody for doing this.
A few more thing though. Compared to a Dodge Dakota, how is the interior space? I have always driven full size trucks and I like big spaces.
Is there plenty of elbow room? Ive driven a Dakota before and it was satisfactory.
does it have a sports car feel? Comparing it to a mustang, does it throw you back into the seat?
Not saying that i would ever do this but if i really wanted to do a donut in my ex's driveway till the tires popped, could it do it?
Did your salesperson discuss the supercharger system with you?
Thank you again

The new Dakota is crap compared to the Tacoma. I just went to the Tacoma Elite Training for the University of Toyota. We got to drive the new Dakotas, Colorados, Rangers, and of course the Tacomas. All of them were way lower in build quality and fitment/quality of materials. I didn't notice any size difference in the Tacoma compared to the Dakota. The comfort of the seats is way better than the Dakota and everything else for that mater. The new Dakota was also the worst in the 4X4 course. The frame was constantly dragging over the dirt humps. As where the Tacomas only thing was the mud flaps rubbing against the dirt. The X-Runner does push you back in the seat. Not Porsche-like but it's got lots of torque. You get through first gear pretty fast. The roadholding is amazing. I can only imagine how well it would stick with some coilovers and some wider tires. Definitly drives like a sports car. Yet it still feels like you are sitting up tall like a truck. The truck loves to get sideways and if it's wet outside then be careful. You could do all the donuts you want.

Miata underpowered at 180 or 140 HP pulling all of 1,500 lbs????????????????????????????

The car is actually 2569 lbs... The Elise is 1900 lbs... If the Miata was 1,500 it'll run the 1/4 in about 12 seconds...

Celica GT-S has 180 hp and 130 ft lbs or torque for 22K out the door, Miata MX-5 has a sticker of 25K... RSX and Mini Cooper S also has the same power but at a lower price tag... Not to mention you can actually fit real people in it and not jockeys...

The car cost more than the RX-8 yet runs 15s at best... Some might squeeze a high 14 on a good day, but thats all you're going to get... For 25K sticker, I really think you can do better...

The issue with the car is not much if you plan on stripping it and make it a track only car, but if you plan on using it as a dialy driver... Every lbs you put on the car will make it very boring... Unlike the XR, you can pack your bowling equiptment, have a friend or two in the car, and probably still pull a pretty close to stock # in the 1/4...

In the Miata, you might think you're driving two different cars if your gas tank is full or empty...

Lets not even start with the NON turbo version of the Miata...

I came from small displacement F/I engines... The XR is going to be my first huge displacement vehicle... For the price, it sure as hell stomps the crap out of the Miata and does it a hell of a lot more comfortably...

BTW, a Celica GT with supercharger will stomp the hell out of the Miata too at around the same price as the GTS out the door and do it more comfortably too!!

OK OK I dare any x-runner owner to go to the local track and give it a few good runs and post their times here. I know that the truck is best known for the handling but nobody knows it for the speed.
That is what this thread is all about. The X-RUNNER! Lets stick to it.
I dont mean to be a newbie telling the addicts what to do but......... come on.
I already know what it will do in a not so good drivers hands but, what will it do in a pretty good drivers grasp?
I am in a position right now that i am studying a few different vehicles. I am trying to pick out the best vehicle suited for me.
If Im going to spend 24+ on a ride i want it to be the right one.
That is all I have to say.

What do you plan on doing with your car? Nothing 24K is going to be a rocket...

Seriously, you're not the only one wanting to see what the X Runner will do on the strip... Asking won't help because there are not but a handfull of these out....

You even test drive one yet? I highly doubt it'll amaze me in the corners, but I have yet to take one in a corner hard... It's hard as hell to even heel toe in this thing to begin with so thats a whole other topic to touch up on if yu plan on running laps like me...

No, I dont really think I could get a rocket for 24. I was just trying to stir up some excitement. I am really interested in this truck. I have always liked tacos but only from a distance.
No I havent driven it.
I am in korea.
That is why I am so interested in other peoples opinions.
If I could drive it, I wouldnt be asking. I would be answering.
So..............If I get more good opinions from XR drivers, then in January when i get back, i could tell everybody what I think about my X-RUNNER. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I drove it, had a list of gripes over at Tundra Solutions...

I'll just quicky relist them here... Not in any specific order...

a) Brakes are horrible, down right under achieving for a truck of this size...

b) Not as sporty as I'd like after my test drive... I punched it in 2nd gear and in 3rd and it didn't really give me the grin factor... The fastest car I've owned is a WRX wagon with major beat it in... The 2nd gear in this car was less amazing than my Integra with almost empty tank... I know the truck is faster, but it wasn't 25K fast...

c) Not much room to do heel toe in the stock pedal configuration... Very cramped and a slightly akward clutch... Clutch isn't as bad as they say in some reviews but it IS different than conventional...

d) Visibility is hindered when changing elevation... I test drove this thing on some extreme hills and end up blind for longer than I would have liked... However I would think this is true for most trucks and big vehicles... Until I've driven enough to prove my point, I'm going to stick to my story...

e) Suvish ride quality at times... I didn't notice any bodyroll, but the ride did feel like it was floating or boat like which I find in a lot of SUVs... In corners, the seats weren't really as hugging as I'd like and I had to use my knee to brace myself against the door to keep me from flying around too much... Also SUV like...

f) Steering takes quite a bit to get used too... Turn radius is up significantly compared to my Integra... I know this is something everyone has to get used to with any car, but it's a personal one I'm going to stick with until I do get used to it...

g) Steering response too loose at speeds... I like power steering, but I hate it without speed sensitive steering... The RX-8 I test drove had the perfect combination of poewr steering with speed senitive adjustment... It was stiff on the freeway, and free rotating when you park... The truck has one setting and it's LOOSE...

h) The waiting list... I just found out my dealer forgot to put in my order to switch with the A list truck yesterday... Today they told me for them to order one in black and bone stock will take them 6 - 8 weeks... This is the time frame you're looking at even if you have cash on hand... I'm going to ask for a better deal than $23,505 which I was last quoted or I'm going to Modesto to pick up MY XRunner which was suppose to be bought already!!!

i) Pretty easy to peel out... The truck packs a bunch of low end and this can add up to tire cost if one is not careful...

j) The truck I drove had a grindy problem going into 2nd... Lots of tranny sounds generated while going into 2nd from a moderate shift... All other gears going to 4th was fine however... It wasn't anything shocking, but audible enough to hear that somethings are grinding...

h) More of a concern than a gripe, but when I gunned it in 1st gear, the front of the truck had a bit of vibration going and I noticed the hood dance a bit... I think it's more of the 4.0 doing its thing rather than a real mechanical problem... But someone might want to add to this one...

I added a few more than I wrote over at TS, but note these are my opinions... I'm 5'10" 185 lbs with no problem feeling roomie in the driver's seat.. The truck felt so big I didn't trust myself while keeping one lane... I constantly have to check my right front corner to make sure I was still in the lane... This is the first vehicle I ever had to do that in...

The rear seats will accomdate 2, even behind myself, but they do have to spread their legs a bit... I seat rather back, but not ALL the way... When I put myself in the back, the feeling can't be better described than 90 degree angle... It wasn't discomforting but I can't imagine a 30 min trip back there... My head did however grace the roof when I was sitting in that position... Knee room was abundant behind the passenger's seat...

Other things I haven't yet tested but know about are..

a) Inner rear wheel spin during hard cornering due to the long wheel base... I have yet to go this extreme in the truck to see how annoying it'll get, but I'm sure the bills for new tires or tire will tell me in a heart beat...

b) Hard to get into for people around 6' 2"... This is actually true for all Tacos and not just XR... The bottom of the steering wheel even when tilt with the seat all the way back still seem to hit the knees of individual drivers...

c) Hard to get into reverse as some stated, but I have had nothing but clean shifts everytime I gone into it... Must of been 5 out of 5 shifts easy...

This is as much as you can squeeze out of anyone who is interested in the truck at the moment... I don't think anyone will have a more extensive list than me and personally I ordered the truck... I'm even more pissed off now because I wrote this a while after I found out I have to wait 6 - 8 weeks more!!!

There are good points to the truck that swayed me, price being a huge factor... Still, I find that if I give the truck a bit of time, everything will fall into place as long as the .9G lateral grip is not total BS from Toyota... If it ain't the XR, then it might be the 05 Frontier...

I should of started a new thread... But forget it, I don't see this place being very organized http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'll just be a good newb and keep the trend...

ok great
did your salesman discuss the supercharger option with you?
If so, what was the cost?

seems like you have more input than most, but you have to remember, it's still a truck, not a car. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

S/C has not been released so I'm sure there are no prices yet.

all the complants you listed are right on, same complants i have, excpt on these 2 you are dead wrong.

the XR is stiff as [censored], i feel every little bump possable, riding down the freeway, it feels like there is no suspension movment, it's rock hard, not floating or boat like in any way. it's about as stiff as you can get.
that's bad if you wanted a luxary cruiser, but it's perfect around corners.
and the seats are [censored] great, they hug you a nice amount, but not extream, you can still move a little, but they hold you around corners.

i'm 5'8 and 170lb's and and have a ton of room. my grandpa is 6'2 and loves the truck because he said he never has room in any cars or trucks he's ever owned, yet with this truck he had a ton of head room and kept telling me how ez it was to get in and out of the driver and passanger seats (it's a diffrent story for the rear seats, but i think we all knew that) the front steats are EZ for even tall people.

everything else on your list is correct.

OK thanks for the input..........Kauss........it seems as if you have driven alot of small cars before you decided to get this. Alot of the gripes on it were just plain ole truck features.

Thanks for the info on the S/C. I didnt know if it was out yet or not. As i said before I dont hear anything in korea.
The only vehicles here are KIAs and Hyundais and an ass load of scooters. Who wants to own a KIA? They do have a intercooled turbo diesel Kia Sportage here in Korea though.
I find it interesting what is available in other countries but not in the states.

The 6'2" thing I got from TS forums... Like I said I have no trouble being in one and it feels like a living room in the driver's seat...

I've test driven the RX-8, WRX, Mustang GT, Accord V6 coupe, Miatas, and some other cars...

Note that I come from a very very low displacement / light chassis background... When I say the XR feels like a boat... It DOES compared to the RX-8... The WRX had a bit of wobble in its feel too, but still less so than the truck...

You have a very comfy ride however, it's just not sporty as I'm used to... If you ever owned a 90 LS Integra, you'll know what stiff shocks are.. Generally every 1.8 to 2.0L car I've ever driven with a bit of sport packed into it had stiffer suspensions... Then again this is comming from 2 test drives... So it might change with more experience but as for now I'm sticking to it...

I unno how hard you've thrown the XR in a corner, but I've actually did heel toe twice in it to take it into a corner pretty hard... Not as hard as a car I own but from what I've felt, I had to swing my left foot towards the door just to brace myself... The rear passengers went flying...

Remember, I drove a demo XR with camper shell and 4 people including myself in it... So that took away from the power and the stopping was prolonged even more...

Still I respect your input and I must say if I wasn't impressed by the truck, I wouldn't be here, I wouldn't of made a deposite and I definately wouldn't be soooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo pissed off the dealer is making me wait another 6 - 8 weeks for mine to come!!!

I seriously wish more performance #s come up from owners too... I'm not going to be much help until I actually get near paying the truck off which will be a year or two...

P.S. if you did a bit of research, you'll know the SC is just a myth right now... TRD has told many people that asked them that they have no plans of a SC for the new 4.0, and they also have no future plans as of this moment for a SC... Also from the feedback most people gave regarding the last 3.4 SC... TRD is not your goto aftermarket booster anyways... Yes they'll be under warrenty, but who wants a POS that isn't optimum without you adding some fuel mods which then voids warrenty? If you just have the SC alone, then you'll end up using the warrenty for sure which is just as bad...

damn and i thought I wrote a lot of info. but hey thanks for the details
