No longer a mini but I'm sure there will be quite few that will be fully sold on the X-runner. For me, I'm keeping my S. The X-runner is just too big for me. I like the front coilovers, big break option and the 4.0 VVTI but could care less about the other changes. The transmission felt like it had a lot of vibration at high RPMs. 6th gear is pretty useless. It's still 1:1 ratio at 4th so what would you need two overdrive gears for. Rear brakes are still drums. The double cab is another story though. I'm thinking of trading in the pre-runner for a manual 4x4 double cab.

I red lined it a few times...even chirped 3rd. The tranny felt funny though. It definitely red lined faster than the S but I noticed the RPM kinda stayed up on shifts even when you let off the gas. It may indeed be quicker than the S but not much and I like the feel of the S more. Maybe I'm just used to to the S. It would be nice if you can try out cars for a week or so.

I got a hair up my butt to go and check out the new trucks at the dealership here in Modesto to see what they were all about.. Having only seen em in pictures, i was curious..
first thing I notice about the red ext cab while I was still in my truck parking it is that the wheel wells are way too large and make it look like a slightly lifted truck with tiny wheels.. (shame on you toyota)
Im sure that was to accomodate the 20 - 22" wheel folks.. (yuck)
truck was much larger..
I got to thinkin and they did exactly what Dodge did.. started with the suv (van w/more doors/windows) and then based the truck like that insted of vise versa.. a few other things I didnt like was the stereo setup.. Im an Alpine guy and this dash has an ugly factory stereo that doubles as most of the dash.. no double din stuff here.. more like half dash! YUCK!!!!
I wasnt too crazy about the gauges, but it seems as tho it was enevatable with the way all the other toyota and lexus cars are or were heading..
I hate the rear bumper setup.. it leaves the tailights out in the open on the bottom side and reminds me of the old buicks with the bumper somewhat sunk into the bed sides. looked wimpy..
Truck had alot of cues from the Dakota with most of the body..
whats up with all these 3d A55 tailights.. before long you'll be trippin over these giving the current trends as bad as they are..
the tailights suck also.. seems as tho all these car and trucks are goin with something closely related to those aftermarket altezza type lights.. I hated that trend from the get-go.. round doesnt have a place on that truck and the tailights somewhat proove that by lookin outta place..
X runner body kit looks goofy in sections and doesnt blend in well with the body lines in some places..
X runner wheels look outta place on the truck.. truck needs serious attitude adjustment. (ride height) to make those look proper..
center counsel opens from the drivers side insted of from the front of the truck.. not very accesable when driving when ya have to push a button on the side of it to open it.. no hidden under storage either..
so ok... its not fair to list all the negatives without some positives..
so heres what I got on it..
I liked that they intragrated the fron turnsignals into the headlight surround and it has provisions for fog lights or brake cooling vents..
Billet grill is definatly needed for its future..
truck is much longer and wider and actually not tooo shabby..
front seats on the X runner are far more comfortable than the sr5 (thats how its been sence the beginiing of the tacoma) not a big shocker..
I think of the X Runner seats as a long distance confortable seat for semi aggresive cornering.. Like a fat chick huggin ya from behind.. nice side boulsters!..
one of the biggest things I liked about the truck was the ext cab now has opening doors! that pisses me off that toyota didnt jump on that for the older ones. would have made life much nicer!
rear seats are somewhat better for those of you that still use yours for passengers.. more foot room and they can fold out to be used as a semi cargo area.. MORE ROOM FOR SUB ENCLOSURES! http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
the bed is somewhat of a trip having adjustable cargo attachment points, optional 120 (house converter) plug in in the side of the bed as well as inside bed storage for little this and thats.. (not locakable) from what I saw, but cool.. That would be great for me and now im lookin to find one to install into my tacomas bed (anyone recommend one?) the whole floor of the bed is made out of high impact plastic.. (dentless bed) they called it.. it was maybe 1/4 inch thick tops.. donno how what to think about that one.. could be good for less weight, bad for age and cracking.. neutral on that one..
I wouldnt drop a weight lifting set into the back of it!
a couple of other things I noticed that they used from the previous trucks.. 3rd brakelight is the same.. and the ebrake handle is the same.. I didnt eyeball it much.. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
All in all.. it seems like a good truck..
did I mention the 4 bangers have VVTI engines? basically V-Tec for all you newbies that were into hondas.. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
cant wait to see what one all done up will turn out to look like.. needs lots of attitude adjustments..
curious about car stereo deck installation stuff tho..
as it sits, be it as petty as it may be, I wouldnt buy it just because of the stereo options. and the tailights.. OOGLY!

10-31-2004, 03:32 PM
so did you test drive one of them? i'm curious how fast the 4 cylinders are ...
Chris D.
10-31-2004, 03:40 PM
I test drove it and it didnt feel any different from that of my 2.4 5 speed..
the truck is heavier by a few hundred pounds, but the engien is a 2.7 which evens things out about the same in my mind..
shifts way better than mine! I test drove the new 04's and they felt harsh to get into gear.. even when I found my used 02 the shift feels the same.. New ones are more like a cars shifter.. I wanted the shift knob off the X runner!! reminds me of my Shelby GLHS's shift knob.
turning radius is WAY BETTER!!!! no more bouncing over a curb to complete a U turn http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm suprised so many people arent really into the new 05 Tacos. I havent test drove one yet, but if I like it, I plan on buying one early next year. The only thing I dont really like looks-wise, is the squared off rear wheelwells....otherwise I think the truck looks snazzy!

Hey guys,
Hey so how is everyone liking their X-Runners so far? That is one bad looking truck! And the fact that you can go hunting Z with it is really cool! I am thinking about one but not sure yet. Does anyone have a cap on theirs? My only bummer about it is (I think) even with the big brake package it still has drums in the rear? Did anyone order theirs?, the guy at the dealership here said that you could only get the X-Runner with no options, and it came loaded up, but that doesn't sound right, because I think you can get a S/C and a big brake kit right? My dealership guys said they didn't even mess with TRD parts because of warranty issues, has anyone else run into this? Anyway I have a lot of questions still and I am not sure, but this seems like a real good place to check into it, you guys seem real cool.....
Welcome to CT. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif There are only 2 members here with an X. I doubt anyone makes a topper/cap for them yet. A S/C has not yet been released for it. The big brake kit is an option.

First off I'm loving my X-Runner. Snug Top has just released the snug lid for it(SL). Retail is around 900$. The TRD Big brake kit is a stoptech unit. Using I believe 13" rotors and 4 pot calipers, dealer list price will be around 2300$. Rotora will be producing a 14.2" kit w/6 pot calipers and stainless steel brake lines (using my truck http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). When you say "options" there are none like side curtain airbags and sunroofs and stuff like that, that is put on from the factory. There are accessories like the TRD Big Brakes, supercharger(soon) and other little stuff. TRD stuff is fully warranteed when installed by the dealer. The only complaint I have about this truck is the crappy brakes. Which will be taken care of thanks to Rotora.

you dont really need discs in the back, since the magority of the wieght sits on the fronts wheels. Then when you do brake the weight transfer just compounds this effect, making the rear drums with hardly any work to do. Leaving the stock drums in will be perfect for pretty much anything you want.

I will agree that I dont like the way the bumper is setup. could have brought it out more. but once the smooth roll pans start to come out then I'll just be throwing one of those on there.
I do like the new bed though. it's suppoed to be much tuffer and in the even of an accident it's supposed to take the impact much better by flexing very much before it breaks.
I don't really think they took any design stuff from the dodge at all. It still holds a lot of the characteristics of the 04 tacoma from what I see. similar hood design and front end styling.
I don't like how the ride height is on the X-runner though. it should be brought down a lot more then it is. and the rims do need to go. I think that When I get mine i'll just get the extended cab v-6 and then wait for all the other stuff to come out for it. like lowering springs and spindles and all that stuff there.
I don't think it woul be that bad of an idea to just go ahead and buy the sr5 extended cab and do all the other stuff to it that the x has minus the body kit and trd suspension.

The x-brace I can just have toyota add in that's not a big deal at all. and for the trani being a 6speed. that's the only trani you can get that's stick for that truck.
what makes it the X-runner is:
X brace (reason why it's called the X-runner)
Body kit
TRD suspension
TRD wheels
TRD sway bar
Sport seats
and I beleive a TRD exhaust.
I plan to have custom wheels as it is. so why pay for rims that I' not going to keep why not just get the cheepy's and then buy whatever size and style I like and keep the cheap rims to have for winter or for play time.
I don't like the ride hieght of the TRD setup so i am not going to buy that. I'll pay less for the stock setup and then just use the saved cash to buy me an eibach or whoever starts making a good quality one that I like.
for the body kit it's not my favorite so i'll wait for wings west to come up with something. I've always liked theres as it is.
the sway bar i'm sure that belltech will produce a better one.
And the exhaust will end up being a full custom including a high flow cat and larger tubing all the way front to back.
The seats I'd have them switch out if I like them all that much more. that's debatable.

I actually measure my value like this
X-Runner + couch > STi + couch....
The STi would have to get some sort of trailer just to haul a couch so the added weight should put us over the top... Anyone wanna try? LOL..

I thought about that too. That was my deciding factors between the mustang and the X. You can get a trailor to pull behind your mustang but its not as convenient. That and it would look pretty stupid.
The only thing that would look good behind a mustang is a couple jet skis.
That is another thing. I have owned 2 cars in my life. A mustang GT and a 2001 eclipse GT. Everytime, I traded for a truck within 6 months.
I wanted the versitility of what the X offers. Although the payload isnt as much as a regular taco, the towing rate is the same. I want something I can drive like a sports car but, when i want to haul something(which is all the freekin time) I can.
There is a downfall to having a truck too though. It seems like everywhere I go, Im one of the only people that has a truck and everybody wants me to help them move or take something somewhere. The helping thing doesnt bother me but it scratches and dents the bed of my trucks up. That pisses me off. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
The composite bed of the new Tacos solved that problem.
The other thing is the gas money it takes to "help" someone. The Taco gets hella mileage for the horsepower and torque. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif
You know.......why would anybody buy anything else?
I cant wait till I get back home so I can trade my Ford.
I just hope the stereo in the X is good.
Do you know how the stereo sounds? I like it loud and clear with a good bass note.
Anybody?

I actually measure my value like this
X-Runner + couch > STi + couch....
The STi would have to get some sort of trailer just to haul a couch so the added weight should put us over the top... Anyone wanna try? LOL..
STi + Free home delivery > Xrunner + couch

Yeah but how else are you going to seat 7 in the X-Runner? MUHAHAHA
It's funny too, I've alwasy been the car audio guy, spending more than a set of 20" plus rims on my cars for audio... But this time around, I didn't even test the stock system... Although I never do since I would plan on ripping everything out sooner or later anyways... Still, with the XR, I'm probably going to keep the stereo and concentrate on driving hard... I like the stock exhaust sound, but it's really really low so you have to have quiet just to hear it...
STi is a fine car, however I'm sick of AWD and need something that can take a bit of pavement punishment... Treat the AWD tranny like crap and crap is what'll become of your car sooner or later... My last car is a WRX http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

haha we paid the same 23,805. BUT, longo gave me 2500 over blue book trade in (prerunner v6 is wanted by all dealers fyi), and only 500 above for his truck. i win. (we have the same truck before too.............)

was pretty intent on trading in for it, until I sat inside. Doesn't really feel roomier than my 03. In fact, with the huge tacky gm-like dash, it felt *smaller*
The giant B pillar kills visibility too :/

Everything about this truck kills visibility... This thing is wide, but I too felt sorta trapped when I sat in it...

I was at an Auto Show on Friday night, and I saw the X-Runner...and I swear I got wood. Right now, I am not going to buy any new truck...mainly because I am in the Navy in San Diego, and my truck is all the way back in GA. Right now I just payed off a '99 Ranger XLT, it was a good starter truck and I fixed every #$^# thing wrong with it they bothered me, I even added new seats, a console, gave it more HP, and more small things. But ya know what, as good as a truck it is...I want something better. So when I read up on the X Runner having 240 HP, roomy interior, kick ass interior, huge engine bay and nice bed...I was curious of how much better it'd be.
I know...I am a Ford guy, I hope to buy a +99 F150 Lightning when I get out of the service...but that's a way's down the road. But after reading up on Tacos, I am curious about them. But I really hate the grill that Tacomas have, and the other models...it looks like the truck is eating a banana sideways, but the X-Runner's front end look far from that. Ford is dumb, they dont change what needs to be changed on one of their popular trucks...therefore they are nikom poops and I will look for other mini-trucks incase if my Lightning doesn't fall through.
'Nough reading. If you have an X-Runner, tell me about it. I haven't test driven one yet, and I don't know what aftermarket accessories are available (since it's a street-like Tacoma, I'm guessing mostly Tacoma accessories?). Just having all that space and looks just gave me alot of ideas that I could do to it without getting a headache (aka Ranger has small ass engine bay)

Welcome to the site, hougy.
I've test driven two X-Runners and was very impressed by them. It had considerably more power than my 03' Double Cab 4x4 (duh) and cornered AWESOME.
I noticed the commonly-complained-about weak braking on the first one I drove, but didn't notice it as much on the second one I drove. I think I was having too much fun to notice the second time. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The interior is sweet - the seats VERY comfortable, in my opinion.
Good luck finding one. And then good luck getting a good deal on one. It seems that most dealers aren't budging from MSRP.
The Lightning is a great truck, and undoubtably faster (stock) than the X. But look at what you pay for the Lightning compared to the X. I think the X is a better value. (Of course, I'm biased. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif )

Welcome to CT, hougy!...
For info on the '05 X-Runner specifically, monitor this forum here at CT. This is probably the most concentrated 'nest' of XR people on the 'Net...
For info on the '05's generally, monitor here and / or the Tacoma forums over at Tundra Solutions. There seem to be a lot of non-XR '05 discussions over there as well.
Because the '05's only arrived this fall, aftermarket goodies are only now showing up in quantity. You can expect the '05+ Taco generation to continue to develop, so things will probably be even more interesting by the time you're in a position to buy (if I understand correctly that it'll be a while...).

Anyone got more than that?
The tires are still holding up pretty good. I've averaged 300 miles to a full tank. About 18mpg. Only small problems so far. Slight pull to the left. The speakers suck and rattle to some music. The seat belt height adjuster rattle(gonna have to put some raammat on the back). The passenger seat shakes like a ***********. Signifigant amount of wheelhop(waiting for gadget's traction bar)

I have an 03 S-Runner and my passenger seat rattled like crazy and toyota tried to fix it by guessing it's this, it's that but I had to lift the upper seat cover up and start shaking things and I found the noise was coming from the bar that goes from one side to the other where the recliner mech. is. I could rattle it and it sounded like the noise I was hereing so I took some wire and wired it to another part of the seat under the cover where there was constant pressure on that bar and it quit. So I did the drivers one also and I have a quite cab except for the glove box has a rattle in it but I can't figure that one out any suggestions if anyone have had that problem I hate that rattle. Any ways I hope this helps.
I had that same rattle in my pass. seat!! Drove me NUTS! I ended up putting some weather stripping (looks like black bubble gum) in the mechanism...works so far! I may have to try the wire! Would a "zip tie" be long enough??
Are you sure its not something IN the glovebox??

Yes if you use the long ones. I used the wire because that is all I had at the time.

i'll add another XR with a passanger seat that makes noise.
i could not figure out what it was, i thought it was the rear passanger door, but when my truck was stoped i sat in the passanger seat and tried to get the door to shake while closed and it would not make any noise, and i tried to get the passanger seat to shake and i could not get anything either, but i can hear it when i drive sometimes.

The streets in SF are too bumpy for me to test my tracking... I think it sometimes pulls to the right, but it can also be the road... (roads have an arch to run water to the gutters)...
Otherwise tho, it's pretty straight...

I'm new to this forum, and I'm just wondering how do current owners of the X-Runner like it. I just purchased one and it's coming in two weeks so I'm pretty excited. I should've asked this question before I purchased it, but I just recently found this forum.
So is it worth it? a fun ride? pretty fast? problems? Things you like, things you don't like. Basically a review. I'd like to reassure myself I bought a good truck especially since It's my first vehicle that I'm buying myself and my first new car period.

welcome to the XR family. I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do. I have had mine for about a week and a half, so I haven't had much "bonding" time with it yet, but I haven't encountered any problems yet. I have just been trying to secure my baby. I got a locking gas cap the other day. I'm going to get some wheel locks, spare tire lock, and my alarm installed next week. If you have any other specific questions, just feel free to ask. Hope you enjoy it!!!

First off Welcome to CT...
As for your question, let me just say that there have been more than enough posts up to answer your question... I'm not going to be the forum police here but it's common for forum regulars to frown upon new posts about "should be answered already" type questions...
I'm sure if you use the search, or just scroll through the last 15 pages or so (should be fun since you're new) you should find a lot of opinions about the XR...
Since you're already on your way to getting one, we sure won't frown upon hearing your first impressions of the truck!! http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
Just so I don't waste my post here, I'll tell you that my truck has been good aside from the minor noises it makes... Gas consumptions is averaging 16 mpg with 75% or more block to block stop sign driving...
Truck handles better than any car I've ever owned, however not the fastest thing on 4 wheels...
This truck is probably the most fit / most fun for what I can afford... I wouldn't of bought it if it wasn't so...
