I didn't see any shots of the X in action in that lame as5 video...just the old man yapping the whole time. Thats why I thought the other one was a sweet video...because you get to see the X do something other than spin.

There is pretty much no need to post any new topics or make any more comments on this site. Everything has been done and said before and rest assured you will give us a link to it.
Thanks for all your hard work. http://www.CustomTacos.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

So now we know... According to PickUpTruck.com's First Drive Write-Up (http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2005/toyota/tacoma/firstdrive/page1.html), the XR has a curb weight of approximately 3700 lbs. This is an 18.4% increase over the '04 SR's curb weight of 3125 lbs.

Nice call, they do look very very similar. Mostly the body lines on the front fender and the bed as well as the windows... sighs.. I still love this 01-04 bodystyling better. Trucks are beginning to look too soft, plastic this, plastic that. What happened to good 'ol steel?

What happened to good 'ol steel?

CHEAP, all the autocompanies are getting too damn cheap. Its easier to mold work with compositis than metal. Also you dont have rust to worry about either. All that cheap undercoating/bumper paint will show up real fast within a few years with rust.

edit: compostits are also lighter than steel, thus they can get better fuel economy without actually tuning the engines.

i dont know, it does have LSD. and 50 more hp and 60 more torque, but for 600 or so more pounds plus the driver. it looks like it might be a race based on how the gearing is. i read somewhere that a s-runner WITH a S/C will do 0-60 in 6.07 seconds. and if the stock x-runner will do it in about less then 7 seconds N/A. i think it would be a close call. but i have to say the x-runner

hummm... interesting read.
so, with a 15.10 lb/hp for the XR, vs the 16.31 lb/hp for the SR, assuming that the drivetrain loss and gearing is somewhat alike, the XR should be slightly faster in a straght line.

however, like i said before, given equal tires, the SR will handle and be more nimble than the XR due to one of the most important factors in handling. less weight. about 600 lbs. it has the same dia front anti roll bar as the SR, but a 1/10 inch larger rear... not enough for the 600 extra lbs. leaf and coil springs are described just like the SR. the 122 inch SR vs the 127 XR wheelbase will also be a factor in nimbleness.

reading the article, i realize why the XR was able to pull .90 lateral G's... P255/45R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE050. the RE050 was one of the tires i was looking at for my SR, however, decided to go with something even more sticky. i should be well over .90 with the SR with of course, a loss of tire mileage. i hope nobody that buys an XR expects the tires to last very long...

i hope that the 6 speed tranny has the right gear ratios... if they make the mistake that Mazda did with their 6 speed Miata, it's not going to be good. too close of ratios, and the rpms never drop low enough to see the peak torque. there is a reason all the Miata racers are using 5 speed cars.

1st gear for the SR is 3.830, and the XR is 4.17... you better be good at throttle feathering the XR, as the SR with with less power and a higher gear can light the tires real easy... resulting in a slow launch.

i still cant find out if the XR can be bought without the body kit. can probably drop close to a hundred lbs without it.
i personally do not need a bigger truck... but if i ever do, then i'd consider the XR.

my favorite line in the whole article:

"But more important: no automatic transmission. If you can’t shift, you don’t get it. If you can’t heel-toe; well, you will never be able to experience the true potential of this spirited performance truck."

i read somewhere that a s-runner WITH a S/C will do 0-60 in 6.07 seconds.

It's limited only by traction. My S has the larger 5 lb pulley to drop the boost a bit, and I got a 6.23 second 0-60 mph before LSD, and a 5.84 after LSD. I'd think a tuned S with the stock pulley should get below 6 seconds, even w/o LSD.

Wow, I missed that tidbit. Those are the same tires that my S2000 has. Even the Ferrari Enzo has RE050 tires! Although I'm surprised they could get those to fit on 8" rims...

yup, as soon as i saw that, i knew how they got it to equal the 350Z on the skidpad...
tires are everything. put RE050's on every car out there, and you suddenly see that a .90 is not that good. it would be amazing if a Miata or Z06 corvette came with those. a 1.0 lateral G would be common.
there are a couple of better street tires out there, but if Toyota put them on, then there would be another class action lawsuit, just like the first Acura NSX with Yokohama A032's, where people complained about the tires wearing out so fast. yup, the lawsuit passed... thats why the skidpad number for the NSX went down the next year. im suprised that Toyota would put tires that soft on a 3700 lb vehicle.

hello... you bought a sportscar with sticky tires. exactly what did you expect ?

i just hope that people that buy the XR do not complain about tire wear... they are going to go away fast. but thats the price you pay for performance. i predict 8000 to 15000 miles if you baby it... i'd kill them in 5000 miles or less.

rednecktaco, no AWD... besides, if it was, it would not weigh 3700... it would be more like 4100. and contrary to popular belief, AWD is not good for handling. a properly set up FWD or RWD will beat an AWD. good example is my STS civic that runs the same class as the Subaru 2.5 RS. there is just no way the 2.5 RS can corner as well as the civic. my civic pulled 1.03 lateral G's, and we could only get .97 with the 2.5 RS on the same compound tires... weight is the factor here just like the SR vs XR. but the AWD is not an advantage for the 2.5 RS when racing on grippy surfaces. only in the rain does it become an advantage, and the civics still edge them out.

and they never claimed that the XR could beat a 350Z on the track... only that it could match the skidpad numbers. truth is, on both autocross and road race course, the 350Z would be long gone. they are not the fastest cars out there, but certainly much faster than any truck can be made to go. put some real tires on the 350Z, such as the RE050's, and it will be way over .90 skidpad, and with it's short wheelbase and better suspension, it will just be a tiny dot way out there in front of the XR or the SR.

dont put all faith in skidpad numbers. like i said before, tires are everything. i dont like the RE910's that come stock on my SR... they suck. all my vehicles have better. there are boatloads of tires that are much better. i only wish the SR came with RE050's stock. i've decided to go with the Falken Azenis Sport RT-215's, or the Kuhmo MX's. anyone want to bet that i'll pull more than .90 ? ( hint, 205-50-15 Azenis is what is on my civic. ) yes, i'll kill them fast, but they are not that expensive.

for a good example of tire effect, we have a Huyndai Tiburon that autocrosses here in H Stock. ( the slowest autocross class ) unlike my class, they are allowed to run pure DOT autocross tires. he runs Kuhmo Victoracers. ok, Huyndai's probably have the worse suspension ever made... maybe Kia is worse... i dont know. but major positive camber on every corner, and uses probably only 3 inches of the outside of the tire. yet, _no_ vehicle on street tires can beat him, with the exception of the STS and STX cars. but the point is, the tires make the car. the same car is one of the slowest cars at the event, if street tires are used.

anyway, i cant wait for an XR to show up at an autocross. i want to see what it will do in the real world. we can speculate all we want, but nobody really knows yet. physics say the weight and size and what we know about the suspension will favor the SR, but we will see.

Dave: For what it's worth - Toyota press releases and other info dating back to the unveiling in Detroit (last January) have consistently stated the body kit is part of the XR package. The clear impression they've been giving is that it's stock just like the LSD.

...So I guess the next relevant question is whether there will be visible holes (or whatever...) when one takes the body skirting off. I've noticed over the last 6 months there seem to be more people dumping the body kit than adding it (on SR's).

Kgrgunman
09-02-2004, 04:05 PM
from the video that toyota released, way back the first time they ever showed the XR, they implyed that the body kit would be an option. altho they never came right out and said it would or would not be standard.
i want my XR with no body kit tho, so if it is standard, does anyone with a basemodel 2005 want to buy my kit? lol (when you buy a base model)

There might be an explanation for the confusion about AWD. There was a second 'X-Runner' unveiled last winter. It was a concept vehicle created by Toyota's Australian design center, an open-bed pickup thingie based on the next-generation Camry (car) platform. It was AWD, and for reasons no one ever explained it, too, was called an 'X-Runner'.

This just in...

According to a Car Connection review of the '05's / X-Runner (http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?article=7475&sid=275&n=157) the curb weight is listed a bit lighter at 3690 lbs.
