rear end exploded

Well guys looks like I finally did it. Ive had my turbo on my tacoma about a year and 5 monthes now (about 4000 miles). I dont drive it very often just when I wanna run around and have some fun. Although when Im driving it im very hard on it. well the other day some guys at work wanted to see it. So I drove it to work. To make a long story short. I was beating on it leaving work and busted the gears in the rear end. It made it about 3 miles away from the job site and now I need a new rearend.

Time for an upgrade. From what ive herd on here the best bang for the buck upgrade is the ford 8.8 3L73 locker. I can do that swap for about 500 bucks. Found a rearend for $200.00 There is a shop in town that will do the Drive shaft conversion for $250.00. Then I figure another $50.00 bucks in random parts to adapt the brake lines, change fluids, and studs to match the lugnuts i have incase some dumb azz gets them mixed up at a tire shop.

Does anyone have any other options in that 500.00 price range before I start this project.

If not does anyone whos done this swap have any tips or tricks for getting done. Like what they used to adapt the brake lines or part numbers for the studs that will fit tacoma lug nut thread pitch and fit the explorer rotors. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Heath....

500 seems great for the swap.

I think ncook had a s-runner rear w/ 4.11 gears for sale. You might want to pm him. And it's pretty much a direct swap. :waytogo:

You dont need a DS conversion, simply a different U-joint for around $35.

And yes thats the best upgrade IMO. However if I were you I would swap the stock LSD for a True-trac LSD instead of the clutch pack style which is probably worn out anyway.

Do you still have the info on where you got the U-joint and maybe a part number. and this tru trac you speak of how much is it? If I can just bolt up a new U-Joint then maybe I can upgrade to the better locker. Any info on this would be great. Did anyone ever get the E-brake cable hooked up. Ive read somewhere that was a small problem as well.

I havent done the swap so I have no part numbers, the True -trac is around $500, and takes some know-how to get it done, you will need to make sure your lash is correct since it replaces your stock gear carrier.

Dont know about the E-brake thing, but your going to just have to get creative.

I'd just get the v6 5lug rear end for now, then pop a locker or dtt in it later...
Maybe regear...

Those ford 8.8's are nice for aftermarket, but it'll be a pain for ebrake stuff... The stock lsd's in em are junk.. Sure, you get disks.. Meh.. Overrated on a truck..

The v6 rear end he's talking about are the ones from the s-runner. The diff is the same size as the tundra diffs. It will hold plenty. Did you hit up ncook about the rear i told you about he has for sale?

3.14 ratio, gonna kill your acceleration, might hold up to the power if you never hook up.

FYI - Ncook had a 4.11 gear ratio for the diff. So I don't know what you're waiting for. I'd hit him up asap!!! Not you Jason but hmasonb34!

That's the route I'd go especially with the 4.11 gearing. And the swap is a direct swap so no need to figure out what works or doesn't work. I love my swap especially that I was able to get it for dirt cheap! :D Good luck and let me know if you need any help.

Yeah, I know, I was letting him know what the stock ratio was on the Srunner rear in case that was what he was getting.

4.11 is gonna accelerate very well, but run out of gear quick with the stock trans..good thing mileage isnt an issue, lol.

Well guess im outta luck. seen Nate on facebook. Turns out what he has is a stock rear end from our tacomas and the chunk out 8.4 with 411 gears (not the full rear end). So im still on the search. gonna get my garage cleaned out alittle then gotta roll the yota down the drive turn it around this push it back up my driveway so the rearend is towards the door side of the garage. Put the frame up on stands and start to take things apart. Hope to start this weekend.

If I was you research an s-runner axle through car-parts.com in your area and pick up the diff from Nick! It's an awesome set up and less mods from the ford 8.8 rear swap. Just my opinion. :waytogo:
