1997 taco A / T non tilt. the steering wheel vibrates with a noticeable dull rattle at idle. Put your hand on it , it goes away. you can feel a minor "looseness" in the bearings. parts are cheap. 25.00 Any insite to this? Is this a normal hi mile noise? Is this column After the wheel is off easy to tear down?

I don't remember anyone mentioning bearing problems in the steering column before ...

Does your Tacoma have the column-mounted shifter?

yes it has a column shifter, but in isolating the "noise" grabbing the shifter = no change, grabbing wheel= noise goes away

Check the inbox for your registered email address. I've forwarded documentation illustrating the components, outlining the removal / inspection procedures, and listing the torque spec's for reassembly (too big to post as an attachment). :waytogo:

I know this is an old thread but I have recently started to have this problem, not bad but it's progressively getting worse. Anyone got any info/fixes/ideas for me?

I don't know ... Falcor1 never posted back to confirm (a) whether he'd done anything with the bearings or (b) whether that was the problem ... He hasn't logged onto CT since last July, and I can't find any of his other posts where he ever mentioned this issue or what he'd done about it ...

I'm throwing a random guess out there that it's somewhere in the tilt mechanism because (I'm guessing) it has become worn over time. Either that or the upper clamp which is shown in the FSM. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas for me before I get into it.

So So Sorry for the time gone by people... My bad... Being a Gov. employee REALLY sucks now and the last year has been REALLY fun... I did finish up my Multiple projects on my house prior to my PAYCUT(S) and FURLOUGH(S) Thank you very much Calif. meltdown.! Anyway no excuse for being gone., The noise in my column is still there and i do have the "parts" for it. Just no time to do it.. No tilt on mine. Just decided to live with it for now. I will probably operate on it this summer

If you end up pulling the wheel off make sure you disconnect the batt first, it can set an airbag (SRS) code.

You aren't too far from sacramento, hit me up if you need help with it.
