Hitchhiker's Guide to Mars

Pretty darn cool vid. At 1:36 two wires deploy from the spacecraft and then detach and fling off into space. Bet'cha don't know what they're for!

Cool video of the MER-A mission ...

About the mystery wires ...

I know, I know!

Those are 'yo-yo weights', deployed to dampen the high spin of the launch platform so the satellite / payload can separated at a spin rate its onboard stability controls can handle ...

The general technique (which dates back to the early 1960's) is described at:

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide to Mars

That's a pretty cool representation of the mission. I can't begin to imagine the joy the NASA employees felt when they achieved their mission

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide to Mars

One has to remember that the JPL (and other NASA-related) guys working on a mission have often invested YEARS of their working lives in a single mission or payload by the time their 'baby' (satellite, probe, rover, whatever ...) finally gets to do what it was designed to do.

The same could be said for men finding that one woman. They've stroked it on their own for long enough!
